For reference #6, there is a mention of epilepsy and immolation on the relevant page of the cited text, but it is not available for review. As well, the citation needs the name of the author of the study (a prison doctor) to establish veracity. A page for an incorrect use of a word?

Updated lead to reflect broader use of "self-immolation." The more specific usage (autocremation) is too ubiquitous, even in scholarly sources (check Google Scholar), to warrant a title change. I'm not sure if the broader usage is used outside studies of Buddhism, which is where I first heard it. Marisauna (talk) 11:37, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

National Mall

On October 4, 2013 a self-immolation took place in the United States on the National Mall in Washington, DC in view of the United States Capitol Building. This should be added to the page. According to Dio Cassius, Zarmarus (or Zarmanochegas as Strabo calls him) immolated himself in the year of the consulship of Gaius Sentius and Quintus Lucretius, which would mean 19 BCE, not 13 BCE or 13 CE. Hairy Dude (talk) 03:53, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Sydney Morgan's France

I couldn't find any information on the term "self-immolation" being used as "setting oneself on fire" in Lady Morgan's France (1817). Self-immolation has been mentioned three times without any description of the word.

Wasn't she the one who coined the term? What does self-immolation actually mean?

Which examples should be listed?

As we can see from this talk page, there's many examples of self-immolation that aren't listed in the actual page. Should this page be a comprehensive list of all examples? I assume not. If we agree it shouldn't be, then how do we decide which examples should be listed or should all the examples be on a different page altogether?

I don't know any of the editors. The first time I came to this page was after Aaron Bushnell self-immolated.

My personal opinion is this page should just be the history of self-immolation and then we have a separate page that is just a list of incidents. Let me know your thoughts and we can work on implementing this because obviously the edit warring that's happening isn't working out

Major repeats from List of political self-immolations can be summarized. If I have not missed anything, they involve protests against former Soviet rule, Chinese rule in Tibet, U.S. involvement in the Vietnam war, Indian rule over Telangana, and to a lesser extent Algeria, Gaza, Tamil, and Tunisia. There is a separate list article to list out all the incidents. This article should mention and summarize the "waves" of self immolations or self immolations with substantial historic effect, like 1000+ self immolations in India or the one that caused the Arab Spring. Otherwise, this article gets out of control as everyone tries to add the incident that supports their cause. It becomes a heap of disjointed info that's much better served by a list. Aaron Bushnell

On the list of political self immolation records in the US Aaron Bushnell is listed but its written that he was protesting the genocide going on in the Israel-Hamas war, does this follow neutrality? MissingLight (talk) 11:15, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

genuinely, why do you think it's not neutral? he pretty clearly stating his reasoning and this article is copying what he said.

it said his actions were in protest of the 'horrific genocide imposed for 75 years known in the west as the Israel Hamas war' on Palestinians, it didn't say that he was doing it because he thought it was that way
