School Wikipedia Project edit

Hey everybody

I'm one of three Cornell University students who will be working on upgrading this page as part of a class Wikipedia project. Two of the members of our group (Eddie and Andrew) are on the heavyweight and lightweight rowing teams at Cornell, and Andrew rowed on boathouse row for four years in highschool. Over the course of the next couple days we'll be outlining what we plan to do to the article over the coming weeks.

Here's a link to our course page and to my user page. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or comments. [COMM/INFO 3460-Online Communities] Andrew (talk)

Hey everyone, I am on the lightweight team at Cornell and will be working on the article with Andrew and Janice. Eddie (talk)

Feedback from Prof. Leshed:
Good choice on the article you are going to expand. Here are some comments to get you up to speed with editing:
  • Follow the wiki language and style. For example, when you refer to one of the group members, it needs to be a link to your user page - instead of "eddie.oneill1213", use "Eddie". Also, sign all your posts on the talk page with four tildes ~~~~, so that they don't go "unsigned".
  • Add the course template to the top of the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LeshedInstructor (talkcontribs) 02:23, 27 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • When adding pictures, make sure they follow the Wikimedia Commons license protocol.
  • It looks like everyone is responsible for adding content to the article, but this project also involves communicating with other Wikipedians and making sure that all the content follows Wikipedia's standards. You have to ensure that some group members are in charge of communication, "wikifying", etc.
  • The proposal only lists one source, but you will need a lot more and diverse set of sources to make the expansion that you do significant.
Happy editing! LeshedInstructor (talk) 20:48, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Feedback from Keith Newman:

Hey guys! I'm a TA for Online Communities. It looks like Professor Leshed made a lot of great points. Definitely listen to her (she knows her stuff!). Below are a few additional notes that I have:

  • I highly recommend starting early on finding pictures. Take a look at the Wikipedia Image Uploading Guidelines. They have a pretty strict policy about images being public domain. For my article, it took us a few weeks of emailing and investigating before we were able to get someone to upload a photo for us, so plan on this being a slow process.
  • Try looking at other similar articles to find ways in which you can improve this article (look for different section headers, information boxes, sources, etc).
  • Compile your sources early. The more sources you have, the easier it will be to write. Even things as simple as Google searching and sharing some of your results with your teammates will simplify the process.
  • This article is part of a lot of different WikiProjects but hasn't been updated much recently. Try reaching out to those communities to see if you can get people interested in helping out!
Good luck and have fun! KeithJewman (talk) 22:12, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Schuylkill Navy logo.png edit

Image:Schuylkill Navy logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Nominated for Did You Know Page edit

I nominated the Schuylkill Navy page for Did You Know under today's date — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jyp25 (talkcontribs) 19:35, 9 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

New Sections and Photos edit

I added some new sections to organize the content as well as added some content under the new sections. For instance, the Turkey Trot and Schuylkill Navy's partnership with US Rowing is now up under recent history! Feel free to give feedback. I'm also putting up more photos in the photo gallery! I think that would help a lot with the page! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jyp25 (talkcontribs) 12:08, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I will be adding a short description for some of the clubs on boathouse row. I will also add a section about the races the the Schuylkill Navy hosts including the Independence Day Regatta, Navy Day Regatta, Stotesbury Cup regatta, Dad Vail regatta, and Head of the Schuylkill. Please feel free to give feedback and make edits. Eddie.oneill1213 (talk) 12:50, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Close paraphrasing edit

The lead has close paraphrasing from content located at http://dla.library.upenn.edu/dla/pacscl/ead.html?id=PACSCL_ISM_ISMSchuylkillNavy. This needs to be corrected. Northamerica1000(talk) 02:50, 9 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
