Talk:Santiago de los Caballeros

Links edit

Some of these links have nothing to do with Santiago. And can someone explain why it is called Santiago de los Caballeros? (St. James of the Knights, (Lords, Gentlement, etc)

Este no es el verdadero Santiago! Mi Santiago de los Caballeros es colorido y de mucha gente caminando por las calles...presenten ese lado!!!(Maribel, Maryland,USA)

Well actually we are working on this is just the fact that we bearly have people giving importance to this article...little by little we working towards that!EdwinCasadoBaez 05:29, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Bravo, we got User:MJCdetroit to activate a nice "City Infobox ". Now how about a section on Culture: Music, Monuments, Festivals, Carnaval, Theatres and Night life and maybe a section om Architecture now that there is as I understand, some pretty impressive homes and neighbourhoods, and also images of the city filled with people. Santiago.. edit

Guys on this article you can see that one of the users added to much of detailed information about Restaurants,Museums, and all of that!!should we erase the restaurant section or keep it there?isn't a sort of propaganda & advertising for this places???what should i do...i see this article as having to much info but that this info is not significant to what santiago really is!please lets reach consensus within 3 days or i'll guess i'll delete it later!:)EdwinCasadoBaez 04:52, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

i decided i will not remove info about the bridge or church but instead i will place a section of Architecture to satisfy does that like the info of the cathedral of santiago and the hermanos patino bridge!i will add more info about the old and modern santiago architecture as time progresses!EdwinCasadoBaez 04:54, 20 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Edwin, I think that the restaurant information can be eliminated. In my opinion, business information should only be kept if there are only a few of those in the city and they have a certain relevance (like the Centro Español and Gurabito Country Club, Industria de Tabaco León Jiménez or the Hotel Mercedes). I haven't removed that information because I don't have time right now to organize it properly. We also have to take care of the "citation needed" tags that our "friend" the ip address 64 has added to the article. Take care and I'll try to colaborate a little bit more often on the DR and Santiago articles from now on.
Also, I redid some significant editing to the article trying to make it a little bit less tourist guide like. That's something else we need to work on and the history section. Dominican 16:47, 23 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Major Changes edit

The Santiago de los Caballeros article is undergoing major changes by my editings!Right now theres a lot of stuff missing to be included in the article and am searching for info in books and in other HTML pages in the internet! Please, other users be patient by my changes as everything will eventually look well!EdwinCasadoBaez 02:39, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

HOMS, hotels, sites of recreation, etc edit

I think that to dedicate a whole section to HOMS, a private project, is too much. What is needed is information about the health system in Santiago, not on a single private future project. I will eliminate it if no extra, meaningul information is added. The same regarding hotels; what is the reason of including hotels? And what about private clubs? And there is so much important information missing. --Pepemar2 (talk) 21:26, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes i dont know who the hell added all this bull...but thanks for the fix...some editors come and add simply what they think that sounds nice forgetting that it most be encyclopedicEdwinCasadoBaez (talk) 08:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

HOMS Advertisement edit

I have deleted half of the relative textin regards to HOMS. It is clearly posted with the purpose of advertisement. It has been removed and I will monitor the page to ensure it remains neutral.Kcuello (talk) 13:55, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sites Of Interest edit

This subtitle needs some upgrades. There were three hotel's listed. As hotel's are not sites of interest (Unless there is a huge amount of history and international interest ex. Waldorf Astoria etc.) I have removed the three hotels. Kcuello (talk) 14:01, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sister Cities edit

It appears that someone is twinning Santiago and Santo Domingo... the very definition of a sister city excludes this and cosenquently I will remove the Santo Domingo twin tag. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.161.65.185 (talk) 05:11, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Santiago de los Caballeros or Santiago City edit

Please, the official name of the city is Santiago De Los Caballeros and thats the one that must be used under image captions and in the article when necessary. Using the term "Santiago City" is not correct due to the fact that it omits part of the official name. It would be better if stated as the city of Santiago De Los Caballeros.EdwinCasadoBaez (talk) 06:11, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's the same!! Santiago de los Caballeros is too long and its already wrote above. If you put Santiago City it means Santiago de los Caballeros in a short form. It's just the same.

In spanish we say Santiago oor Ciudad de Santiago most of the time.. People does not uses a lot Santiago de los Caballeros to call this city....

Regards.... ChezSant (talk) 02:39, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

We dont go by what people call it, its the official name that counts, not how people refer to it69.118.92.193 (talk) 07:21, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, IP editor, in English Wikipedia, that is not true. The most prevalent name used in standard English wins. Unfortunately, one may have to spend time figuring out whether "Santiago de los Caballeros" is the same thing as "Santiago, Domnican Republic" as the article, as written, does not explain the long, little used name. —RVJ (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 22:14, 8 December 2009 (UTC).Reply

La trinitaria edit

i dont understand why La trinitaria, a small sector of santiago is portrayed in the main image as the whole city and the skyline...total nonsense, at least they should let the people know that it is La Trinitaria —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.49.7.125 (talk) 21:04, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population data edit

Please, use only population data from official sources. The last national census (and the official figures) was in 2002; all other figures are estimate and, in this case, the source of those estimates should be indicated. --Jmarcano (talk) 20:41, 9 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

You have to use official data for population figures; usually, data in websites are not official unless the estimation method is explained. If you want, you can develop a section (Demographics, Population or similar) where those estimated figures are explained, stating the sources. --Jmarcano (talk) 19:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The page edit

I see Santo Domingo has a nice montage while Santiago has a boring little picture. Some of the pictures placed in here were removed. Please this can be made much better. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.126.218.129 (talk) 21:26, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

To Joke or not to Joke edit

In the History section a joke was added regarding the name. I don't believe this is appropriate. I will remove it in 3 days if not edited.

Name of the city edit

The article currently claims, without a source, that "Santiago de los Caballeros" was named after the thirty gentlemen who signed its incorporation. This strikes me as very dubious. There is another city in Hispanic America whose official name was "Santiago de los Caballeros" (what is now known as Antigua, Guatemala). In that case, it's clear that "Caballeros" refers to the Knights of St. James, one of the main Spanish orders of chivalry during colonial times. Santiago (Saint James son of Zebedee) was the patron saint of the Spanish army, and the capitals of various colonial jurisdictions were named after him, particularly those under military government (see Captaincy). Could someone please clarify, by citing a trustworthy source, what the origin of the city's name is, and who the thirty "caballeros" were? -- Eb.hoop (talk) 19:40, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I didn't write that section nor do I have a source, right now. Yet I recall from school that there was a charter signed by the city's founders, and that they are referred to as St. James Knights. But for some reason 7 (signers) is the number that I recall and not 30, although it is called such. I have a book about Santiago's history I'll try to find it and get back with a source and perhaps update that section. --El Mayimbe (talk) 02:48, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Santiago Province edit

An anonymous IP is repeatedly inserting info about the Province of Satiago de los Caballeros, while this article is about the City / Municipality of Santiago de los Caballeros. Please, stop edit warring and explain the intention of yout edition. If there is no article about the Santiago Province, you can create it. Salut, --IANVS (talk) 23:25, 23 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Santiago's population edit

The article says that the city's population as of 2002 is 622,101, but apparently, there has been a big boom since 2002 because I read that the city's population has exceeded over 1.3 million. I have some family members in the D.R, and that's what they also tell me about Santiago's boom. Anyway, is there any way that change can be reflected?
