Title

Is "Airborne Troops" an official English name? Troops, referring to individual soldiers and not organizations, is usually only used informally; in traditional military parlance a troop is a small cavalry formation, part of a squadron. "Airborne Forces" seems like a better translation of voyska to me. —Michael Z. 2006-10-29 06:55 Z

What are they?

Are the Airbone Forces an arm of service, equal with the army and air force, or are they part of the army?

The Airborne Troops are the most capable mobile assault forces of Russia, as they are airborne forces in the first place

They are currently not equal to the 3 primary branches, but they are a sort of secondary branch directly subordinate to the Ministry of Defence. If the MoD is a division, then the Army, Air Force and Navy are the regiments and Strategic Rockets, Space and Airborne are the independent battalions. --Kazuaki Shimazaki 14:08, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Special forces within VDV

The reason I categorised the VDV as special forces is because of the Special Reconnaissance article. The Reconnaissance troops of VDV are also trained in these tasks although they are nominally subunits of their parent formations. Besides that most SpetzNaz troops can only reach their units following either service or at least training with VDV. -- mrg3105mrg3105 05:44, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Lost in translation

"десантно-штурмовой батальон" - untranslatable into English since dessant is a French word dessaint and shturm is a German word schturm. In English it would be something like Introduced-Storming, but to differentiate Soviet troops from US Army (which has actual Air Assault branch and unit) I would suggest using dessant-assault.

Similarly there are no 'Marines' in the Soviet or Russian navies (thats the US or Royal navies). The Russian amphibious warfare troops are called (literally) military-sea dessant. They have never served as part of the ship's company as the Western Marines did, but were always purely amphibious infantry troops. During WW2 some sailors served in the infantry capacity, and were called morskaya pehota - sea infantry (literally).120.18.186.141 (talk) 02:40, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Russian amphibious warfare troops are called Naval Infantry. And VDV translates perfectly into English as 'Air Descent Forces'. And also 'descent-storm batalion'.--SergeiXXX (talk) 02:32, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

easy, you just ask the original creator (me) on my talkpage for a new graphic with the structure :-) but we have a problem: what units make up the 11th Airborne Brigade, 56th Guards Air Assault Brigade and 83rd Airborne Brigade?? For the 31st Brigade, the old Vad777 page suggested that the battalions were the 498th and 499th, with the 500th having been disbanded in 1996. Buckshot06 (talk) 20:28, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

For the 83rd, Vad's page as of 2007 said: "окр.подчинения, до 1986 в Польше- В Уссурийске до начала 90-х годов стояла только 14-я обрСпН и рота СпН 5-й армии. Потом на Барановский прибыла 83 одшбр в составе: 635, 654 и еще один пдб, 9-й гвардейский (только он и был гв) гаубичный дивизион и в середине 90-х появился 111-й отб - 31 танк Т-80Б.Бригада и сейчас жива на БМП гоняют. Should this page be split?

It covers both Soviet and Russian VDV - which are arguably not the same thing. It notes that Soviet VDV were split between Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus, so a page on the RUSSIAN VDV is not the right place to cover the SOVIET VDV - so a separate page for Russian VDV from dissolution of USSR, and page for Soviet VDV ending at dissolution of USSR. Orphaned references in Russian Airborne Forces

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Russian Airborne Forces's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Split now should be considered

With B.Velikov's excellent additions regarding the post-1990 structure of the VDV, this page is now over 150 kB. WP:SIZERULE suggests it now be split. I would like to go ahead and do this. Are there any comments? Buckshot06 (talk) 08:32, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

Paratroopers in Kharkiv

"2022 Invasion of Ukraine" section contains a few mentions of paratroopers "dropping" (Vasylkiv) and "landing" (Kharkiv). I took interest in early reports of parachutes and scoured the internet for evidence of it, but haven't found any. "landing" might be ok but "dropping" definitely implies parachutes.
