New site created edit

I have created a new wike page for the Old Royal Naval College as that is an existing physical location in the World Heritage site. It is surely not acceptable that the seach engine did not find the ORNC directly and that a historical function of the buildings was confuse with it. This page now is devoted to the Royal Naval College, Greenwich that once existed. I have expanded the history of it and made it a bit more informative. It needs more work. But, it should perhaps have a page as it take a place amongst the other RNCs. This page has a 'see also' to the history of the buildings in Greenwich Hospital (London). —Preceding unsigned comment added by LezJ (talkcontribs) 10:06, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing this page merged into a page on the Old Royal Naval College and having no separate page on the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LezJ (talkcontribs) 10:43, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re the title of this wiki site edit

This doesnt make sense (as someone says below). It is now The Old Royal Naval College. It should be referred to as what it is known as now. This should be about the site and not the institution: the Royal Naval College. The site, originally the site of a palace, and buildings have been used as a hospital, a naval college and now as a place of education. You cannot entitle this wiki 'Royal Naval College' go on to say it is known now as The Old ... and then say formally is was a training college: the Royal Naval College was formally a hospital! It is clear that we are, or should be, talking about the buildings and the site and these are called The Old ... and it is this site that has a history that includes the Royal Naval College - an institution - and the Greenwich Hospital - and institution. If one looks at it this way is is not wholly misconceived to merge this wiki with parts of the one om the Greenwich Hospital. It could be that there should be separate wiki sites dedicated to the Royal Naval College and the Greenwich Hospital but these sites would have to be about the institutions' histories or functions and only cross reference to the site. Otherwise, this is all confusion and unhelpful to readers 79.75.61.177 (talk) 14:59, 24 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

History edit

I've cut down the length of this article substantially. It duplicated a lot of information which was really more appropriately housed under Greenwich Hospital and Palace of Placentia. - MykReeve 18:02, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

WTF edit

When this "article states that the College is now know as:

"Old Royal Naval College"

So... why on earth is the article titled as "The Royal Naval College". That's retarded. I was searching for the Old Royal Naval College and, of course, Wikipedia's search engine is a pile of steaming crap, so I couldn't find this entry without going to Google.

Again. Retarded. But typical of the crap that is Wikiality. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.149.142.69 (talk) 22:39, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just did a Wikipedia search and found this page immediately, can't see what the problem is. --jmb (talk) 19:17, 8 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal edit

Disagree - there is a much stronger argument for retaining two articles. However, I think that only the history of the hospital charity should remain at Greenwich Hospital (London) and the bulk of the architectural history of the site currently in that article should should be in a new article at Old Royal Naval College (Am I right to think that the "The" in the title of the current redirect article is contrary to Wiki style guides).--Lang rabbie 15:33, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I've removed the tag. The main article should be at Greenwich Hospital, which is the building that has existed through all changes of use. This article, like that about the current main tenant Trinity College of Music should focus on the institution, rather than the architecture. Abberley2 (talk) 00:18, 17 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

October 2013 edit

At this edit yesterday I created a new page called Royal Naval College (Greenwich). A few hours later Necrothesp moved it to Royal Naval College, Greenwich. However, that was an existing redirect to Old Royal Naval College which had a long history, having previously been an article, but the article had been merged and redirected to Old Royal Naval College by LezJ on 5 February 2009. It seems that the effect of Necrothesp's move was to merge the history of the two articles. I take it that everything above this header is the talk page of the existing redirect, which seems to me to show that there was no consensus for LesJ's move. The article really should not be merged and redirected to Old Royal Naval College again: that page should be about the present-day site after the closure of the college, which is plainly notable.
