Es una localidad del noreste del peru, esta ubicada en la region San Martin. Rioja es la capital de la Provincia de Rioja en la Region San Martin en el norte Peru. Esta situada al este de Moyobamba Moyobamba. Tiene 24 263 habitantes, de acuerdo al censo del 2007.


Durante el periodo de los Incas, la Provincia de Rioja fue habitada por dos tribus, los Uquihuas y los Chepenes.

A fines del siglo 16, uno de los primeros Catolicos misioneros arribo a Uquihua.

Rioja fue fundada en Septiembre de 1782 y fue originalmente llamada Santo Toribio de la Nueva Rioja.


Rioja esta situada en el valle del Rio alto Mayo en el norte de la Region San Martin. Sus coordenadas son longitud 77°08’30” y latitud 06º03’00”.

The peaks surrounding Rioja exceed 1,000 metres above sea level.

The average temperature is 22.5°C. with actual temperatures varying between 16.5°C and 28.4°C.

Comunicaciones y TransporteEdit

Rioja is connected to the rest of the country by land, air, and water.


Connections via the "Carretera Marginal" (the main jungle highway). There are daily bus services as well as minibuses, collective taxis and lorries.


The Rioja airport accommodates small and medium sized airplanes, both for passengers and cargo. The airline Aero Condor flies twice a week to Lima.


Motor boats, canoes and rafts use the rivers Mayo, Tonchima and Negro for small cargos.
