Poss copyvio edit

Have removed the below section as is a possible copyvio of www.ashextourism.com/Andaman&Nicobar/andaman_homepage.htm (the formatting indicates that text was not copied from wikipedia, but the other way around). Besides, it is totally uncited. Contains interesting info that, with decent citations, should go back into the article, so am pasting here to assist that. sassf (talk) 20:00, 12 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Port Blair :-A clear history of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands can be had only from a British Survey of these islands conducted in 1777. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands remained the abode of the Negritos and the Mongoloids respectively, who occupied the Islands for centuries. These islands remained secluded from the mainland till the end of the 18th Century when people from the outside world first arrived. The history of these islands could be divided into four broad periods the period of seclusion and piratical disturbances

Discovered by Arab merchants in the 9th century, Marco Polo was the first official visitor to this tropical string of islands. The islands were involved in political tug-of-wars — they were annexed by the Marathas in the late 17th century, then by the British in the 19th century and occupied by the Japanese during World War II — before they were incorporated into the Indian Union in 1947.

The harbour town of Port Blair, and also the main entry point to the islands as well as the state capital, lies on the east coast of South Andaman. Way back, in 1788, a young British officer named Archibald Blair discovered the splendid natural harbour that he named Port Cornwallis, which was later named after him.

a) the British regime - a period of foreign intrusion and settlement b) the Japanese regime c) and the Post-Independence period.

In the Second Century, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were located in the maps prepared by the great Greek astronomer, mathematician and geographer, Claudius Ptolemaeus, which possibly is the earliest reference to these islands. The early history of Nicobar is not well known although these islands were familiar to traders in ancient times, the islands being situated close to the trade route to the Far East. Though little is known about Portuguese activities in these islands, it is evident that the Portuguese missionaries started preaching Christianity among the islanders. The Nicobarese language also reflects a few Portuguese words.

Smith Island edit

The main island, on which PB is located, is emblazoned with Smith Island on Google Earth. No mention of this name here. Tony (talk) 13:06, 25 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
