Only place with sunrise and set over Pacific
editJust moved this claim off the page and over here:
As a result of the way it juts southward into the Santa Barbara Channel, Point Conception is the only place in the contiguous United States where the sun can be seen to rise and set over the Pacific Ocean.
I thought about merely adding a "citation needed" tag, but a quick look at maps and the position of the sunrise and set--especially during the winter--proved to me that the claim is wrong. Some other points that fit the description (to various degrees--some definitively, some a bit iffy) include: Point Reyes and Duxbury Point north of San Francisco, Point Loma near San Diego, Point Fermin, Portuguese Point, Point Inspiration, and Long Point, all near LA, Point Dume near Malibu, a number of points near Santa Barbara, and Point Santa Cruz. Remember the sun rises and sets significantly south of due east and west, especially in the winter. Pfly (talk) 07:28, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
Conception or Concepcion?
editIt has always been my understanding that the original Spanish spelling (Concepcion) was the correct English spelling for this place name. I haven't been able to find suitable sources for this yet, though, so for the time being I'm keeping the page where it is and have created a redirect from Point Concepcion.
