Improvements edit

Maybe I will give it a try but I think I will post a link back here on some ham forums. This way people who are more expert on digital mode operations can add to this. Alan Kroeger 17:20, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

"The most commonly used Amateur program for this purpose is Airmail. " Really??? How do we know that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.124.180.134 (talk) 21:34, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Criticism edit

Recently Pactor II/III have come under fire for being closed patented protocals with a single source. This and the inability of users without SCS modems to decode proper identification of stations transmitting with Pactor II/III has led to some heated discussion on the subject. I think that this article should include a section detailing this. --Kayfox

I don't think personal opinion and Amateur Radio politics belong in this Encyclopedia entry, and is not the place for mention of "Heated Discussion". This is a Technical brief on what Pacor is. What? How? When? etc.

I have rewritten the article to wikify and for clarity. Have added at at the end some of the negatives about PACTOR for balance as suggested by Kayfox. Thanks to all who contributed to this point, believe we have a reasonably good article now. K6DHP

I ask that all editors of this page add it to your watch list, because of the various troll-infested flame wars on some amateur radio bulletin boards, this article is at serious risk of vandalism. KayFox has already suggested POV pushing, and the criticism section is entirely unreferenced.

"As wireless internet connections, including satellite internet service providers, become commonplace, users are finding that other ways to communicate that are less costly."

This implies that pactor uses are moving to other modes because they are less costly. yet the reference link points to a yachting website showing users how to use pactor itself, with commercial e-mail providers like sailmail.

"The two enhanced modes, PACTOR II and PACTOR III, are much faster but have been kept proprietary by the German company, SCS, that developed them"

This has been backed up by a reference to a page showing users how to configure the winlink airmail software?

"The price of these modems (in some cases as much as a HF radio) discourage many potential users"

This has been backed up by the same reference! A instruction guide for setting up airmail? Then it has been further backed up by a reference to the front page of the canberra region amateur radio club? It seems these references were just picked out at random because the section had been flagged as uncited.

References in this section updated and new ones added. Added reference to WINMOR. Dhpage (talk) 19:07, 5 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Better references needed edit

There is some misguided information in the Criticism section misrepresenting and confusing how Pactor encodes information. This seems to be coming from POV derived from the various forums chocked full of unlearned opinions. Forums are not a good primary reference for Wikipedia. This is putting Wikipedia at risk of libel/slander and needs to be fixed quick. I'll give it a week and then go through and mark up any remaining problematic portions to protect Wikipedia. crcwiki (talk) 17:53, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Expert input needed edit

It's clear the article as currently written lacks some fundamental understanding of how the Pactor modem products work. This is a complex subject clouded by some happenings in various ham radio forums. The section on Criticism is so off the mark it really should be deleted immediately, but for now I will mark it as disputed and expert needed. Really this article should only express how the various SCS modems work and why. How they are used is barely relevant and maybe not at all for an encyclopedic article. crcwiki (talk) 20:19, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
