Pow, straight to the Moon edit

Does "Nyamwezi" really derive from the Swahili "people of the moon" as this article claims? The story sounds a little too clever to be true, especially because "nya" is not a Swahili prefix. Malangali 14:15, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes it does, and I have the explanation in my notes around here. I just need to find them. :) I'm going to go completely from memory here, but I seem to recall the reason was, that the Nyamwezi came from the eastern part of the country where the moon rose over the land. —Viriditas | Talk 21:28, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

←§==== No it does not. the explanation above is not correct. The nyawmezi come from the west not east. I am a Nyamwezi and in my youth had access to the oral history of our tribe. Nyamwezi comes from Nya-mweli which means people of the west (or people from the west). This is also found in kigogo language. the waogo live east of unyanyembe where the nyamwezi originate. Also Nyamwezi and Sukuma can be considered as one ethnic group. The languange and customs are similar. The Sukuma do not call us "nyamwezi" but they refer to us as "dakama" people of the south. But we the nyamwezi call them va-sukuma meaning people of the north. in the nyawezi-sukuma language the cardinal points of the compass are Sukuma (north), kiya (east), dakama (south) and mweli (west) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ypuge (talkcontribs) 03:27, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tagging for cleanup edit

Much of this is rambling, repetitive and contradictory. Needs a heavy edit and pruning, with inline refs, and removal of non-sequiturs. Rexparry sydney 06:07, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. 207.200.116.134 (talk · contribs) was not open to collaboration, as the edit history shows. :) —Viriditas | Talk 21:29, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Historical and present Nyamwezi edit

There needs to be clearer boundary between what is historical and what is present. As it is now, the sections Social organisation, Economy and Slavery are all describing the historical situation only, not the present, so I am putting them as subsections of the history section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.255.6.148 (talk) 20:27, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Delete text edit

Though this whole article needs rewriting, this sentence should be deleted: “ Ivory porters should be viewed as free and voluntary labor, although it is true that they were at times financially abused by their chiefs, but later these people were defeated by Arabs.”

Are Nyamwezi the same as "Nimeamaye-Monoemugi"? edit

I'm reading from Wikipedia French's article about "Monoemugi", a (hypothetical?) medieval kingdom located in Tanzania's interior, roughly corresponding to Nyamwezi lands. A seemingly synonym for this kingdom was "Nimeamaye". They mention Nyamwezi slave traders attacking Lunda, Luba & Maravi. This "Monoemugi" is widely portrayed in XVI & XVII c. European medieval maps. Could there be a relationship? Could they actually be the same & a mere wording mistake is breaking the connection? 2806:2F0:55C0:C39A:476:9DBF:531B:9842 (talk) 22:02, 4 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
