New name

Renaming to Xinbei

Come December, instead of simply moving this to Xinbei and creating a redirect, I think there should remain two articles: Xinbei, which should have the contents (and page history) of this article with relevant updates, and Taipei County, and article on the historical political division (with table of sub-county divisions and commentary of administrative changes, but with everything else excised). The Tainan County, Kaohsiung County, and Taichung County article should similarly be kept as articles. --Jiang (talk) 20:15, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

The new official English name for Taipei County has not yet determined. However, both potential major-to-be have announced that they prefer other than names rather than Xinbei. One possible translation might be "New Taipei City." Therefore there's no worry that we need to change this article into "Xinbei" something.Tsungyenlee (converse) 20:31, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

The Taipei County Government has decided to use Xinbei City; however, it submitted three names (Xinbei City, New Taipei City, and Greater Taipei City) to the Ministry of the Interior in July because of stupid people. People should know that the Ministry of the Interior asks local governments to use transcription [1], and the Ministry of Education has adopted Hanyu Pinyin since 2008. The impending name change is already being felt in English language media. It appears that Xinbei is the favorite so far but one source, the Taipei Times is using "Sinbei". Check out Google News results for Xinbei versus Sinbei (no hits for Hsinpei).

In the "Renaming to Xinbei" section above, someone mentioned possibly keeping this article (for the entity that was formerly Taipei County) and making a new article for "Xinbei" (or whatever the official name is). Although it technically covers the same area, the new entity will function as a direct-controlled municipality instead of just a county, making the two fairly different administratively, politically, etc. Thoughts? xinbei - new taipei city

Does any of you have any idea why the new mayor wants it to be called New Taipei city in english? How many cities in Taiwan are called differently in english and chinese? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.49.91.149 (talk) 12:13, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

He just thinks anything new is good, and many people (half of people actually) like it, too. In fact, there is no good reason for people to choose New Taipei City at all. New Taipei City is the only exception.--Meow✉ 15:55, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

New Taipei → New Taipei City – This page was moved from New Taipei to this title just moments ago. I was going to move it back, but it seems like both The China Post and The Taipei Times (two major local English-language papers) frequently use the full name when referring to the city, so I thought I'd get consensus for the new title to stick while having the capitalisation fixed. wctaiwan (talk) 15:47, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

The city government's site has it listed as "New Taipei City Government", but then again, so does the "Taipei City Government" site. I think this is more of an issue that stems from the Chinese names (新北市 and 台北市; 市 = city) which usually include the type of subdivision an entity is (i.e. 縣 = county, 區 = district, etc.). There were also several instances from The China Post links/headlines [3][4][5] and occasional ones from The Taipei Times [6] that used only "New Taipei", indicating that adding "City" may be due to direct translation and that English usage of the name is less than 2 years old.

I would vote to move the page back to "New Taipei" for two reasons: 1) There appear to be instances of the name without "City" added in English language sources, indicating it might not be as official or integral to the city name or usage, and 2) As far as I know, the only other uses of "City" in the official name are ones that need to differentiate it from another entity (e.g. New York City, Panama City, Mexico City). Quebec, Mexico and New York are not comparable cases - as noted above, those all need the "city" to be distinguished from a wider national or sub-national entity. Here, the "New" already distinguishes it from Taipei. Unsure as to move. Arguably it's redundant, but a quick Google search does suggest that the fuller title "New Taipei City" seems to have some - albeit not universal - traction. New Taipei City → New Taipei – It is my belief that the September 25 move was procedurally without a complete discussion or consensus, although the mover moved it in good faith. On the merits, I believe that "New Taipei City" as the full title is redundant and therefore unnecessary. While news accounts will use "New Taipei City" more, that is because that will mostly be in the context of referring to the the city government, rather than because "New Taipei City" is the more common usage to refer to the city itself. Further, all other special municipalities in Taiwan -- for good reasons -- do not have "City" in their article titles. (See Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.) There is no good reason I see as to why New Taipei should have "City" appended to its article title. Nlu (talk) 18:22, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

• Oppose. I'll repeat my link evidence from the discussion above. The current title reflects WP:COMMONNAME, and the following usage of "New Taipei City" have nothing to do with the city government, but rather the geographical entity of as a whole: [11] [12] (note juxtaposition of "Taipei" with "New Taipei City") [13]. All other special municipalities in Taiwan do not have an English modifier ("new") in their otherwise Chinese-transliterated titles, so there is a clear reason why the English word "city" should be appended for clarity. If the New Taipei City government (not "New Taipei government" in common English usage) had gone with either "Xinbei" or "Sinbei" or "Hsinpei" then indeed there would be no need to add the English word "city" at the end.--Jiang (talk) 19:21, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Taipei County should be merged into New Taipei City, since the latter is just the current name and expanded form (New Taipei City is no larger than Taipei County). Oppose. This should be retained for historical purpose, same like the articles of Tainan County, Kaohsiung County and Taichung County. The Taipei County article give some important information such as its formation, abolishment, its divisions (what are the townships or cities under its jurisdiction at its detail history (any upgrade to city from township etc)). These kind of information if we put it inside New Taipei City article will just be too much for it. It is best to keep this historical information in the 'historical' Taipei County article. Comment The case of Tainan County can not be applied here, since what is now Tainan City is the merger of the old Tainan City and Tainan County, while New Taipei City is the mere upgrade of Taipei County; the area didn't get enlarged. • Undecided: The only information currently in the TC article that's not already covered in the NTC article is the table detailing the evolution of each subdivision from xiang to zhen to qu, etc. It even includes some information from 2014, which post-dates the TC-to-NTC upgrade by four years.

If others agree that the table is worth keeping, then I feel that the TC article should also be retained as a separate article, because the table does not belong in the NTC article, since some of the information in the table (especially the sections highlighted in pink) applies to subdivisions that have never existed in NTC.

By the way, if the TC article is to be retained, shouldn't it be given a separate talk page, instead of the current redirect to the NTC talk page? Phlar (talk) 14:21, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

I just realized that Taipei County doesn't contain any valid references. I deleted the one reference that was there, because it pertained only to Tainan County and was irrelevant to Taipei county. Where did the information in Taipei County come from?? I don't know how to view the version of the page that existed prior to 25 December 2010, when all the redirects started, so I cannot tell if it had some valid references before then. @ASDFGH:, do you recall where you got the data you added at that time?
