Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha, or more simply known as "Nani" is another product of the Sporting Clube de Portugal Academy. Born in Amadora, Portugal on 1986-11-17, Nani has quickly moved up the ranks at Sporting and has become a regular member of their squad. He has been tipped for his dribbling abilities which resemble those of Cristiano Ronaldo or Ricardo Quaresma (both of which also came from the Sporting Academy). Nani has 6 goals in the 2005/2006 season ( 5 league goals and 1 cup goal ). Though he has proven himself to be a very talented player he has yet to become a regular starter and usually is a substitute for Carlos Martins in the 60th minute and plays on the Right Wing. Nani has only been called up to the Portuguese Under-21 squad a few times so far, but in the U-21 European Championship later this May, he is sure to make a regular appearance. Nani has signed a contract with sporting till 2010 and looks to have a very positive furture ahead of him.

I know that he grew up in Lisbon, but I heard in a few interviews and commentaries that he was born in Cape Verde. The only thing is that these commentaries are in Portuguese and I'm not sure if in game commentary is something to be cited, plus it would be helpful if any Portuguese speakers can back that up, because my Portuguese isn't perfect. thanks

The article says "Nani was born in Portugal, when his family migrated to Portugal." It seems as if they meant to say something else, i suggested before that he's from Cape Verde. I think that's what the author meant.

He won't be given the no. 18 shirt at United as that belongs to Paul Scholes (he scores goals).

On the skysports website Nani is already listed as part of Manchester United's squad 18/06/07

He's as much a United player as Gareth Bale and Darren Bent are Spurs players. He has signed a five-year deal with the club. Sporting are already spending the transfer fee. It's done.

True, although I have never in my life seen a player sign a contract, take photos in the shirt and then the deal not go through.

Neither have I that I remember in detail, though I sure there was something in Match magazine (20-odd years ago, not the comic now) about a player that signed, had pics taken in the kit, paraded in fornt of the fans during a game, that the deal then fell through.

Here's hoping that this comes off quickly, but as I've said on another article, God forbid, but if Nani (or Anderson for that matters) suffers a career-ending injury (or worse, death) between now and the transfer officially going through (ie FIFA/FA clearence), then they would never have been a United player. The trouble is, he's almost exclusively known simply as "Nani". Almost all the 33,000 web hits for "Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha" also use "Nani", and there are a further 400,000 using only "Nani". Tentative oppose If I could rephrase Stemonitis, he is known almost exclusively as Nani: i.e., this is what is likely to be on the back of his shirt, that is how press reports and fans will refer to him, almost without exception, and any exception will need explanation; for this reason I oppose the move (Policy suggests that we use the name best known to English speakers, and that is undoubtedly Nani). That last bit is a good point. I can't actually think of any other footballers to whom "Nani (footballer)" could refer directly, but I'm pretty sure there's a Uruguayan player called Roberto Nanni, if that counts. - PeeJay 01:31, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

These last concerns, while valid, should not affect the choice of core title, but only the choice of disambiguating suffix. If there were a dozen footballers all called just "Nani", then they should all be at articles with titles based on "Nani". Pele is at Pele, not Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Even though there's other footballers with "Pele" in their name (e.g. Abedi Pele, Yohann Pele, Pedro Pele). If there's a (made up example) Brazillian player called "Pablo Nani" in the future, then all you'd need is a disambiguation at the top of the Nani (footballer) page ("This page is for the Portugese player. Ronaldo comparison

I'd take the Ronaldo comparison out. The likeness is purely based on them both being Portuguese and coming through the Sporting academy. They are actually quite different players, so comparing them in the first paragraph is lazy.

Nani and Anderson lived with Ronaldo in his house when they moved over from Portugal. Ronaldo helped them settle down and that resulted in all of them becoming good friends.

Can someone check firstly his international stats in the info box. Are they correct - couldn't find confirmation either way in the links at the end of the article? Secondly, in the Portugal section of the main article, it seems to read he was 13 years when called up for the 2006 U21 squad, IF I'm reading it write. Darkson (BOOM! Shouldn't there be some sort of section saying why Nani chooses to use a completely random (and stupid) name?

Or a section saying he ignores his real name because he isn't proud of his heritage or something.... Initial thoughts

• My initial thought on reading through the article is that his youth career and time spent at Sporting CP is 'glossed' over. There’s a lot more detail on his ManU career. Try and expand out the early part of the article if possible: the early life and the Sporting CP sections.
  • Early life suggestions:
    • Why was he raised by his aunt?
    • Siblings?
    • Schools?
    • Heros/idols?
• There's some problems with overlinking in the article as well, e.g. Cristiano Ronaldo is linked several times throughout the article. Link only the first occurence. And make sure it's the first occurence that is linked, e.g. you've linked Old Trafford the second time it appears in the article, but not the first.

Prose

• The infobox says he plays as a winger/forward, the lead just says winger. Which is correct? They should be consistent.
• In the lead you say he's "commonly known as Nani". I was expecting some explanation as to why later on in the article. It's not part of his birth name, so it's obviously some sort of nickname. Is there any information on where he got it? When he first started to be called Nani, etc?
• "imigrated" is spelt with 2 m's.
• "the attention of Manchester United, who eventually secured his services". Remove 'eventually'. He attracted their attention before the start of the 2007-08 season, and he signed before the start of the 2007-08 season. That's not "eventually" signing.
• "would often kick a ball about together" is very informal. Why not say "used to play football together"?
• "five percent of which was paid to Real de Massamá"? Why? There’s no mention of “Real de Massamá” previously. Did they train him or something? Also is there a link for Real de Massamá?
  • Cannot find any article explaining why Real de Massamá recieved a five percent cut.
    • I don't think that this is too worrisome any more, since Real de Massamá is mentioned as one of his first clubs. It's not just randomly thrown into the article, leaving the reader going "huh?". NiciVampireHeart 16:13, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

• "Just four minutes later he then teed up Wayne Rooney for his 100th Premier League goal" - it's not clear whose 100th Premier League goal is being referred to here.
• "Following this matured performance, Nani then set up the second of a 5–0 home win over Portsmouth, however just four days later he was sent off for a lunge at Stiliyan Petrov against Aston Villa, which resulted in a three match ban and ruled him out of the League Cup final." Run-on sentence. Split into 2.

• I don't like the celebration section down at the bottom on its own. I;'d suggest a) moving it up to above statistics and honours sections, and b) integrating it with a 'Style of play' section.

Drive by Comment - There's still a couple of WP:MOS problems. Remember that years don't need to be repeated in the prose after first mention. Also, all references need to be after punctuation. "Luis Nani"

I've removed all references to the name "Luis Nani" from this article as it is a complete misnomer. Nani is his nickname, which people sometimes add "Luis" to in the belief that "Nani" is his surname. The Press Association is particularly guilty of this, although I believe that their error stems from a limitation of the software they use to record football stats; every player's entry in their database needs a first name and surname, so for Nani, they've put "Luis Nani". Same goes for Anderson, who they often refer to as "Anderson Oliveira". – PeeJay 13:15, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

Transfer to Fenerbahce

Nani is coming to Istanbul today, the club stated that his plane will be arriving to İstanbul at 20:00 and tomorrow there will be a open signing ceremony in the club's stadium. The owner of the plane that he is coming with and also the number he is going to wear in his new club is all stated. In fact, it doesn't make sense for him to have been born in Amadora then moved to Praia, since he began his career with Real Sport Clube in Queluz. This source states that he grew up in Santa Filomena, which overlooks Amadora. So maybe he identifies more with Amadora since he grew up there, but based on the sources available, I'd say he was definitely born in Praia. – PeeJay 12:44, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

No one is claiming he moved to Praia, either he was born in Praia and moved to Portugal as a baby or he was already born in Portugal and never lived in Cape Verde. According to Manchester United's website a while ago he was born in Praia while according to the Portuguese Football Federation website, the Turkish Federation website and himself in an interview to the Cape Verdean newspaper Nha Terra he was born in Portugal. --Joaommx (talk) 14:50, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I think it is Amadora, Portugal. That above link is now dead, but can be seen from the Wayback Machine here. This Portuguese Football Federation source also states he was born in Amadora. I think these two sources alone are substantial enough to say he was born in Amadora, but was of Cape Verde descent. Vaselineeeeeeee^★★★ 14:36, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
