Not enough about technical aspects

The article concentrates on use but is lacking on the technical side. There are no mentions of XLR connector, balanced audio, audio signal, line level audio signal vs microphone level, audio transformer, headphones, resistor, etc.

Basically there are three main types of mult box:

1. – an expensive and fairly heavy one in an aluminum briefcase or other large form factor, requiring power from AC mains or from batteries, supplying transformer isolated balanced audio signal switchable between line and mic level, available on XLR or minijack or TRS connector, a nice VU meter, and
2. – a cheap and lightweight passive one that has XLR line level in and XLR mic level out, using resistors to drop the voltage and provide a rudimentary degree of separation between output jacks (example A, example B), and
3. – somewhere between these two with only XLR jacks in and out, power required, electronically isolated outputs, an LED or VU meter, headphone jack with volume, and a test tone switch (example A, example B)).

Perhaps just a regional name: press pool

Where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area at least, lots of industry people call the mult box a "press pool" for obvious reasons, I should think—very likely short for "press pool feed" or "feed to the press pool". IATSE Local 16 (San Francisco's stagehands' union) has an online audio tutorial that casually equates "mult box" and "press pool". Local A/V rental houses offer "press pool" rates: [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Stanford University calls it a press audio pool, just to be clear it's not for swimming, heh heh. I was unable to find a book reference using this term in this way, but it's worth another look. Binksternet (talk) 00:01, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
