Engine and motor

Can someone explain the difference between a motor and an engine in the article? basilwhite 18:45 EST Feb 11, 2006

shouldn't this be a disambiguous page? Diploid 11:53 EST Feb 15, 2005

Although engines, particularly vehicle engines, are often referred to as motors, many engineers and others believe that that is not a proper use of the term motor. A machine that converts heat to mechanical energy is called a heat engine. Most machines that are called engines, such as internal combustion engines, actually perform two energy conversion operations. The chemical energy in a fuel is converted to heat by the process of combustion and the resulting heat energy is converted to mechanical energy by a heat engine process. The thermodynamics article should describe the basic theory of heat engines.

transduces vs. converts

I believe that a transducer is generally considered to be a signal conditioning device rather than an energy conversion device.--C J Cowie 00:47, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

The new link is fine, but transduce and transducer are not application-specific terms. Please at least read a dictionary definition before performing an edit predicated on assumption! Surely the former link was at least a hint? – Ringbang 15:37, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

A link to electojects.com has been repeatedly added to Stepper motor, Electric motor and Brushless DC electric motor by Special:Contributions/217.53.109.235, Special:Contributions/82.201.156.201, Special:Contributions/217.53.107.168, Special:Contributions/217.53.16.164, and others.

The link in question is registered to Abdoh Ali Mohamed, Hay Swesri, Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt.[1]

I wonder if the four IP addresses listed above have any connection... Naw, couldn't be. [2][3][4][5] Egypt is a big country. Must be a coincidence.

I'm going to start patrolling wikipedia for any links to electojects.com or redirects to it and deleting them on sight. If they come back, I'll move to blacklist the address. - Mdsummermsw (talk) 19:38, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: Move to motor (disambiguation) and redirect motor to engine. Jafeluv (talk) 08:40, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

MotorMotor (disambiguation) — Looks to me like this is (more or less) an improper disambiguation page.

Disamb pages are supposed to be used when there's multiple different things that are referred to by the same name, but in this case they're (practically) all just different types of motors in the same sense, rather than being different things entirely.

We need to either point motor to a suitable article that covers all motors (engine is a strong candidate as it is synonymous and currently covers motors anyway) or else create a new article. In the meantime this disamb page is in the way...

Either way, I'm proposing to move the disamb to Motor (disambiguation) and putting the redirect or a new article at motor.

The primary point is though that this isn't a real disamb though, and if we can sort this out, we should be able to massively prune it because the new article will cover it and link outwards to the same articles.Rememberway (talk) 17:37, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

  • Support; I agree Motor should be a redirect to engine. Powers T 02:05, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
  • Support move and redirecting motor to engine, with the requisite hatnote there. Srnec (talk) 00:26, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
