Talk:Melun

"junction of the Marne River"? -- that's at Charenton, a long way to the North of Melun. Is this wrong, or has the river moved that much? -- Tarquin 11:30 Jan 4, 2003 (UTC)

Melun Shield dating from the 1400s - "Melun (Seine-et-Marne): Azure on a semy-de-lys or a castle with three towers argent. Melun was one of the original strongholds of the royal domain. Motto: fida muris usque ad mures, recalling the siege of 1420 when inhabitants had to eat rats." http://www.heraldica.org/topics/france/frcitdep.htm

I am not sure what has happened. I uploaded the picture then I can not find or use it. I tried to upload again and it says it is there. Maybe a typo?

I uploaded again and saved the file and it worked this time.

This does not mention the later Guillaume de Melun, who became Archbishop of Sens and was held in captivity in England during the 100 Years' War (possibly at the same time Charles d'Orleans was being held there.) I don't have more on him at the moment, but that later part of the family should be updated instead of being dropped in the 11th c. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.247.68.146 (talk) 19:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

There were many Guillaume de Meluns over the centuries. All the article on Melun provides is a snapshot of the documented first lineage of the Counts of Melun. What is seen is what is well documented. Yes, there were indvidual Counts of Melun before this family line. And later in time there are other documented lineages of de Meluns.
One of the more notable ones later in time was: "Guillaume, viscount of Melun, Count of Tancarville, Grand Steward of France, first lay president of the counting house, then grand master of waters and forests, perished at the Battle of Agincourt." (Page 1399-1400). Birth date should be about 1351 with a baptisim date that took place after

his father died. "Ba. ca. 1353 - 1415 25 10" is the notation.
