Taimanov's punishment for losing to Fischer

I thought we should mention the part about how Taimanov was "officially" snagged for smuggling in a book by Solzhenitsyn (I can provide a source from his autobiography if anybody requests it), but I'm having a hard time wording it well; can someone help? • It looks good to me, and it's an excellent addition to the article, thanks. I think there's a discussion of this in Russians v Fischer, which probably takes it from Taimanov's biography. I don't have my copy with me at this moment but I will try to remember to check later. Also, if you have a reference for anything in the article from his autobiography, please add it to the page. We have many fine chess bio articles that have many accurate and sourceable claims but no references actually in the article. Very few chess articles have too many refs. Some facts are too obvious to require a ref, but I think it's a shame to not cite any references at all until each claim is specifically challenged. If you've got a ref, put it in! (I don't have Taimanov's bio, but it's on my wishlist.) Quale 20:26, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
• Forgot also to mention: I think some people don't bother with refs because they don't want to wrestle with the citation templates (Template:citation and others) or the <ref></ref> tags. Please don't let that stop you. References are important and you don't have to worry about making everything "perfect". Someone will gladly clean it up for you—collaberation is the key wiki principle and some people even enjoy doing that sort of cleanup work. (It does help if you are sourcing a specific claim to give page numbers if you have them.) Quale 20:32, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Page History

I just deleted something that said something about "algebraic notation" for chess, but I saw non. Then I looked at the history and saw that on 13:31, 17 May 2008 by Xeron220, the algebraic notation was taken away, and on 03:02, 24 January 2008 by Bubba73 the Note on algebraic notation was added. should I just leave it be or put back both please write back on my talk pag --RayqayzaDialgaWeird2210    18:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Currently no algebraic notation is used in the article, so the tag isn't needed (and shouldn't be there.) Bubba73 (talk), 18:59, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Finish the story about his first wife, Lyubov Bruk, and after.

I found a mention that he and his wife separated under the pressure of the official sanctions resulting from the Fischer fiasco. Did they ultimately divorce? I found a site giving her year of death as 1996. When did he "remarry late in life"? What is the name of his second wife? A little dish on the 1970 Las Palmas Interzonal and 1971 Candidates Match with Fischer.

In How Fischer Plays Chess by David Levy (R-H-M Press 1975 ISBN 0-89058-011-1 page 123 in the notes to the second match game writes "It is really impossible to have much sympathy with Taimamov for the manner in which he lost this game (or for his 0-6 score in the match), since his qualification from the Interzonal was assured by a 4300 bribe to his last round opponent, the Yugoslav Grandmaster Milan Matulovic."Jszigeti (talk) 02:11, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Musician first ?

During Norwegian broadcaster NRK's live airings from the World Championship final at Dubai, the watchers were given two problems to solve early in each game between Magnus Carlsen and Jan Nepomnjasjtsjij. One easier and one hard (called "Today's Russian" regardless of nationality). These were presented by Atle Grønn. One of the difficult ones was a 1977 Leningrad match between World Champion of the time, Karpov and Taimanov. Atle Grønn said that Taimanov was (by Soviet standard) "a musician who also was a very good hobby player". Here's the problem :

Black to move and White (Karpov) resigned!!

At first look Karpov might have been pleased, with the one pawn extra and just two steps from the b1 promotion square. Even if Black's Queen has a mighty position. The "bomb" is Ng3+ !!. The best White can do is Qxg3 with a lost of his rook and both pawns (at least the dangerous one at b6 - and it's over.) But why not h2xg3 ? Then Taimanov's can play the wonderful Ra8 - and thereafter nothing can stop Rh8#. A hobby player with Black vs the World Champion.... 83.250.73.248 (talk) 11:10, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
