Talk:Marcher lord

The March of Wales

It strikes me that there needs to be a separate article on the medieval "March of Wales" - which could be started by moving the section which was transferred to this article some time ago. The remaining Marcher Lord article could then be a more general overview which also covers other parts of Europe. The proposed March of Wales article could also include a List of Marcher lordships which has also been suggested. There's also a link Pura Wallia and Marchia Wallie which currently directs to an article specifically on Gwynedd and which needs to be developed. I'm no expert, but I am reading a new book, The March of Wales 1067-1300 by Max Lieberman, which I could use to help put something together, along with other sources. Any views? Suggested merger with List of Marcher lordships

An article consisting of just a list always suffers from lack of introduction to the topic. Both articles are at present short and space considerations on a merger are not therefore a problem. Is any purpose served by providing a stand-alone list divorced from an explanatory article? The article could perhaps be standardised to the format used in English Feudal Baronies, with a detailed discussion followed by a detailed listing. I suggest the List be merged into this article. The list was originally at Welsh Marches, and was then cut and pasted into a separate article - I can't remember the reason, but it seemed pointless to me. Have you thought at all about the overlap between this article and the Welsh Marches article? Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:23, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your response. I hadn't thought about the overlap with the Welsh Marches article, please express your thoughts on that issue after assessing the following. Here is what I propose as a logical structure for the broad area of the Feudal Barony:

• "Feudal barony" (effectively an entry level disambiguation page, to be created by renaming Feudal baron and de-merging its constituent elements into the articles listed below. Feudal baron mainly concerns Scottish baronies and is 99% identical to Prescriptive barony. The latter needs to be merged into the former.)
• English feudal barony- article to be renamed, and to receive merger from Barony (country subdivision)
• Scottish feudal barony- article to be renamed and to receive demerged Scottish elements from Feudal baron
• Irish feudal barony- new article, to be de-merged from Feudal baron. Done, text copied, but not demerged pending consultation.
• Scottish feudal lordship - no changes needed, ideal format.
• Marcher lordship to be renamed & merged from List of Marcher lordships
