Merging of articles edit

A city and UA differs from each other, both have distinct characteristics. Thus its better to keep both separately. --115.184.69.204 (talk) 21:53, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

A city is governed by a Municipality/Corporation, where as there is no specific administrative authority or region defined as such for an urban agglomeration. UAs are mainly used for identifying the urban areas. Other than calculating urban population these areas have nothing to with. If that is the case, India has nearly 475 regions identified as UAs and practically every such place will end up with one of these articles. Commander (Ping me) 06:23, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Agree with Vensatry. Unless the UA has a specific administrative authority, there is no need for two separate articles, this can be handled in the city article itself.--Sodabottle (talk) 07:52, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

If that is the case many articles named by 'metropolitan city' which are purely based on UA need to be merged with respective cities. for instance Trivandrum metropolitan area and Trivandrum city have different articles. this can be seen with many other cities like pune, thrissur, cochin etc. As per census of government of india its clear that a metropolitan region is decided more depended on UA calculation. Malappuram city might not be a metropolitan city in full sense. and that is why this article is not named as metropolitan city instead 'urban center' is used. I dont find its necessery to have specific administrative authority for UA to be part of wikipedia. The boundaries might be identified using UA, but its not just about the population. In fact its about the urban area which is more influential in the economy, trade, industries etc of a country by its pottential, which is much bigger than a city. --101.63.226.245 (talk) 12:54, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't know about Trivandrum but Kochi has an Urban development authority. So it's feasible to have a separate article for Kochi and not for other cities like Thrissur, Kozhikode and Malappuram. Commander (Ping me) 17:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

'Master plans for development of urban conglomeration will be effectively implemented'( quoted from 12th Five Year Plan: Approach Paper of kerala Government/E. APPROACH TO LOCAL SELF GOVERNMENT/2. Urban Local Bodies/b) As you know latest census came in 2011 and thus everything will be included only in 12th five year plan which would come in this year. So its sure that there is going to be a development authority soon or later. you cant say since today its not there the article is totally irrelevant.--Truebrother 18:09, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

The article cannot be created per Wikipedia:CRYSTAL. If that's the case, many would demand a separate article for cities like Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy in Tamil Nadu for which a local planning authority already exists. Commander (Ping me) 18:19, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't think this article violates any policies in the Wikipedia:CRYSTAL. If you find please quote it. And regarding Coimbatore and other cities, of course we can have separate pages. But you'll have to make sure that the content is according to the boundary of ULB. for instance, the article Coimbatore should only have information about those things falls under its jurisdiction and boundary. every thing outside along with the information of UA can be in another article saying Coimbatore metropolitan area. --Truebrother (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 18:43, 8 January 2012 (UTC).Reply

Bias of editors against small cities in Wikipedia edit

  • Some people in Wikipedia want to show Trivandrum and Cochin as the major cities in Kerala. They don’t want Malappuram or Kannur or Thrissur to metropolitan area even it is government census.

I think we should keep both the articles. UA like Malappuram, Thrissur, Calicut etc are developing areas of the state and however we say, a city and an Urban center or Metropolitan area are not same. --Truebrother 16:26, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

UAs are used for calculation of urban population. A region cannot be officially defined as a "Metropolitan Area" unless a development authority like Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority exists. Commander (Ping me) 17:30, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are totally mistaken. a metropolitan city need not have a development authority to call it as a metropolitan city. As u said chennai became metropolitan city in the first place and that is why a metropolitan development authority came instead of chennai city development authority. for instance, Kolkatta was a metropolitan city long before the development authority came in to existance.--Truebrother (talk)

If they are developing areas, we can create separate articles when they are fully developed. Except for the urban population, on what basis you say Malappuram UA as a notable topic. Commander (Ping me) 17:40, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

That's nonsense. if we wait for every developing areas in India to be completely developed to make it part of wikipedia, i fear Wikipedia is not going to have any articles from India on cities and Urban areas. Because every cities are developing day by day.--Truebrother (talk)

And a final word, that these are my understanding about Cities, Metropolitan Area, UA etc. So if you still think am wrong, i have nothing more to say. Let the discussion be continued with other users.--Truebrother (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:14, 8 January 2012 (UTC).Reply
