It doesn't even seem to be true, though. I think someone just put in the thing about september 11th to be a nut or something. Can anyone confirm this? There is no MSN 9.... there is MSN 8.0, which recently replaced MSN 7,5 -- it's also called Windows Live Messenger. there are split opinions on what's better; 7,5 or 8,0 but I'd say 8,0. It has features like talking to people while appearing as offline, sending offline messages etc.

Not exactly. Qwest is a reseller of MSN services. Qwest provides the connectivity, MSN provides the content and services.

not so with the qwest dsl with msn. msn has very little to do with that other then the email servers and the messenger. qwest handles all traffic, and support for the msn service except for very specific parts with tech support at which point msn might be involved. outside of the msn browser,email, and messenger the rest is qwest. and since the msn browser isn't a requirement and can be had outside of the dsl/dial service I'm not really counting that part the only time you really get qwest as just the reseller might be when using the msn dial up. 168.97.133.243 20:48, 18 December 2006 (UTC)jamok

Agreed. MSN = MicroSoft Network. Leave Service out of it (We all know they do ;-).

Couldn't agree more, as long as Microsoft continues to associate "MS" as their abbreviation (and will forever continue to do so), therefore it is (The) Micro Soft Network..hence MSN :). Who claims this??? Any sources??? Netcraft.com may not be the end-all of site-traffic ranking however, I have Netcraft's toolbar installed, and as of right now. (Sunday, Septmeber 5th, 2005). MSN.com [ http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.msn.com/ ] ranks as the 14th most visited on the web. The article says it is #2 according to Alexa. Whether Alexa is any more accurate than Netcraft is anyone's guess. Ranking the top sites by number of visitors is extremely difficult and requires stuff like toolbars installed in browsers and a lot of estimation and guesswork. More required on the early days of MSN

More information on the original MSN product which included a proprietary hypertext browser and proprietary email protocol would be interesting. These were quietly discontinued in around 1997.

The very last, original MSN which shipped with Windows 95, used Microsoft Multimedia Viewer technology - perhaps that's the "proprietary hypertect browser" referenced above. The email protocol wasn't proprietary, per se. The client was the then current Microsoft Exchange client.

In August of 1996, MSN began the work to migrate many of the community aspects of MSN to the internet. In roughly 1997, a media-heavy wrapper around the MSIE browser was released. It used what I believe was a proprietary authentication method for POP3 - the name escapes me. Toncu 03:48, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

The current history doesn't provide enough context in terms of how the first MSN was launched to be a direct competitor to the Web, and for a while there, many companies hedged their bets and ran dual sites on MSN and the Web until the supremacy of the latter was confirmed. Improper division

Since this article is about MSN and MSN alone, I don't think it is appropraite to divide it in to "The MSN era" and "The Windows Live era". MSN hasn't gone anywhere and isn't going anywhere, some of its services have simply been rebranded. It's okay to note that, but then for the most part, the rest of the article should focus on MSN the portal/ISP, and the Windows Live article about the custom portal/search engine/free software provider. - Mike | Patch 02:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Guys the external link section is nothing but a link farm for MSN. There is already an article on the list of services MSN provides and plenty of links to msn.com in the content of this article. Wikipedia should not be a spam external link place for any one including Bill Gates.

MSN Internet Subscribers

The article says 9 million compared to AOL's 26 million. That stat is very old considering that AOL has lost half of its customers in the last 4 years...

Yeah, the AOL article says that "[AOL's] customer base has decreased to 10.1 million subscribers as of November 2007" with a citation to a Computer World article to back it up, so clearly this statistic for MSN v. AOL is very outdated. I put "citation needed" in this article, but nobody has followed up on it. Can someone update that statistic with a modern statistic, please? Tabs?

In the version of MSN before Windows Live, if you had multiple conversations going on, you could merge them all together into one window by pressing F9, and you can seperate them into seperate windows again by pressing F8. I installed Live two weeks ago, and I still haven't figured out how do merge them. And yet, somehow, it works for my sister, and it's automatic. MSN Premium being phased out

As the text I added notes, existing Verizon DSL customers can stick with MSN Premium, but new ones must use Windows Live, and once existing customers switch to Live, they cannot go back. This information has been provided to me more than once by Verizon tech support, and I am sure it is correct. Furthermore, MSN Premium will not be upgraded from IE6 to IE7 because of the phase out of MSN Premium. Same source - Verizon tech support.

This is wrong, yeah? Windows Live is a different set of products to MSN. I'm think maybe this is just confusion over the fact that Windows Live Messenger is still popularly known as MSN.

MSN is shut down!

Use SVG or PNG?

Using SVG is recommended in Wikipedia, but the SVG version of MSN logo did not supersede the quality of PNG version.

I think you find the latest version satisfactorily, the reason they appeared of lesser quality because the first one had a PNG embedded in it, an issue I was working on, but then someone "Traced" the png, tracing as the name implies traces each color of the logo, And uploaded it on top of my existing work.

It is a bad idea to do a trace unless it is a flat single color logo. I would recommend people study a little more into SVGs and try converting them from other formats (AI, EPS, PS, CDR, WMF) before tracing them, or better ye never tracing them , let the people that have years of graphic design experience do that.

(Scandalous) content of international editions

There is no mention that MSN.de (German edition) sometimes posts nude photographs from Playboy directly on its own site (under the tab Lifestyle or Leben). First of all, isn't that a copyright violation. MSN & AOL the most popular providers, or "DIAL-UP" providers?

Under the section MSN dial-up and premium there is this text: MSN still offers dial-up Internet service under the name MSN Dial-up. MSN remains the second largest Internet service provider in the United States, behind dial-up leader AOL This gives the impression that MSN and AOL are the 2 most popular service providers, ahead of even broadband/fiber providers. Major update

I just did a heck of a lot of work to make sense out of these articles:

• MSN, the article about the website <-- merge MSN Mobile, about the apps, because now the MSN website & apps are the same concept and there was a lot of redundant information
• MSN Dial-up, the article about the ISP <-- merge MSN Explorer, about the dial-up software, because it follows the chronology and there was a lot of redundant info there too

I put a lot of thought into this, being WP:BOLD and in WP:GOODFAITH. I tried to make everything more concise, less repetitive, with better English / grammar, and cited well. Please nobody swoop in and revert it; let's at least talk it out first. --Samvscat (talk) 09:57, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

I could not find any citations for the data sources for the MSN Sports app. I traced back the original edit here and there was no citation. A web search only points back to the Wikipedia article. Microsoft Operating System

Microsoft and their operating System? I have been with them from time of DOS; yes with the time has been many improvements’! Most of improvement is/was improvement? However window-10. So sorry to say I do not see any improvement, yes they did make “LOT” of changes but I do not see here improvement. The OS is made specifically for Games and yes Microsoft Co. may have got some financial gain, but that is not improving it is financial gain if that is what you looking for, However that is American way!! I am owner of four PCs two runs on win-7, one on XP, and one on wi-10 I find wi-7 reasonable good operating system, however I do mist uncensored news that I unable to have.
