Original edit

An infobox for the original Rose Royce recording of the song was requested at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles/List_of_notable_songs/8.

while I don't doubt that Madonna's cover of the original probably sold more copies than any other, I don't think that that in itself warrants the publicity stunt of dedicating such a large portion of the article to her version, video and memoirs, etc., which should probably be included in her own article - with as many links as you like. The photo should thus be of the originally released single, or possibly thumbnails of each and every one of the covers. I will not make any changes until feedback given as I don't want to enter into any kind of serious in-fighting as can be seen at far too many music article pages.83.191.28.62 13:36, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually I doubt Madonna's version sold the most. Rose Royce reached no.2 in the UK with this song in 1978 (back when singles had to actually sell something to get in the charts). It was also a big hit in other countries. Jimmy Nail reached no.3 with it in 1985. Madonna's version wasn't even released that widely. The bias of the article towards it being primarily about Madonna is pretty appalling and whilst her version deserves a mention, it should not take over the article the way it currently does. I've cut out most of the information about the music video she did for it because it is totally irrelevant to a Wiki article.79.66.95.234 (talk) 17:39, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
There is still way too much information about the Madonna version in this article. Madonna's version pales in comparison to the relevance of the original Rose Royce version and yet there seems to be more details about Madonna which is inappropriate for an encyclopedia as it gives undue weight to her version. 89.168.101.44 (talk) 11:28, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regardless, there should not be a separate article for the Madonna version. --Wolfer68 (talk) 16:54, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

As I commented below, I have merged these. Madonna's coverage at this point is lopsided as far as article length BUT since Rose Royce's version is a significantly bigger hit in terms of charts, I think the answer here is to beef up the Rose Royce portion (and any others) and not to spin Madonna's portions off - it gives even more undue weight to one particular cover version. - eo (talk) 21:16, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

PR efforts edit

Rather than heeding the templates, content is becoming increasingly more blatently an advertisement. I suggest - off the top of my head - doing a disambiguation with obviously the original version under this article, mentioning briefly the cover versions, and other people's what-have-yous elsewhere. Constructive feedback, anyone? Regards, --Technopat 21:38, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. The article seems to be all about Madonna's cover--not the song itself. If there is one picture, it should be of the original, if possible. Cstokesrees (talk) 15:15, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I do not understand why no mention of the lead singer, Gwen Dickey is present on either this page or that of the Rose Royce main page.

Granted, Ms. Dickey is no longer an active member, but her vocals make this and other RR tracks the hits that they were. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.109.23.77 (talk) 00:48, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry for having "mistakenly" deleted the reference to Ms Dickey - I didn't realise that it was/is the same person as Rose Norwalt. However, R. N. is the name given at the Rose Royce article and should be used if that's what was used for the credits on the original recording. Am putting R. N. in this article and linking to the Rose Royce page. --Technopat (talk) 09:36, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge edit

Please note : There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Songs/coverversions with the purpose of trying to establish a standard rule for merge/separate different versions of the same song. Please make known your feelings on the matter. --Richhoncho (talk) 23:02, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Merged and comment based on the consensus for Madonna's other notable cover version ("Fever") to be merged, I have merged this also. As with other covers, this is not technically a "Madonna song" and in fact Rose Royce's version was a bigger hit on the charts. - eo (talk) 21:13, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

REGGAE VERSION-Love Don't Live Here Anymore edit

There was a sweeeeeet reggae version of this tune in the late 1970's long before the Bounty Killa 1997 version that sounded almost like Rose Royce. Artist Sharon Forrester. The slower reggae beat version is the "original" reggae version, the version on youtube misnamed her as Shanon and is faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAOcNoNiuaM.

Madonna version edit

The single was indeed released in 1986 in Japan, the artwork is shown here [1] [2] and includes the same image as the Madonna video compilation (Catalogue number: P-2041 (7") and WPDR-3109 (3" CD)). The single was re-issued on 3" CD single for the CD Single Collection Japanese box set in 1996 [3]. The b-side for the single was "Over and Over". Thanks JWAD Communicate|Nicely 10:42, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Jwad, please provide some reliable source, and not some fan sites please. The eil link is also not reliable. If this was indeed released in Japan, then atleast one of the books would have noted it, but none of them does. Why? — Legolas (talk2me) 10:58, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry mate, I have searched and searched to try and get a reliable source and the only ones I can find are that of the Madonna fansites which have the scans of the singles. I understand if the information cannot be used, which is a pity as it was actually released in 1986 with the unique artwork. The reason probably that publications don't detail the box set and single is that they usually get their (mostly innacurate) information from online sources that list a "discography" and these very rarely include releases that are not worldwide. Sometimes I wish that fansites such as MadonnaTribe were in charge of Madonna's official site as it would have lots more information and accuracy (her website even details the Blond Ambition World Tour as "Blonde"!)--JWAD Communicate|Nicely 11:26, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you on that her official website can be a mess, most of the times. That's why I had to redirect so many of her articles, just because there weren't any sourcs, and lacked notability. We are bound by the rules of WP policy,. — Legolas (talk2me) 05:30, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Production edit

I was the person in charge of the production of Love dont live here any more as recorded by Rose Royce for Whitfield/ Warner Records the article I read has little truth in it I set the record striaght but it was removed why would you let in acurate atricles remain in your system??? Leanard Jackson Chief Recording and Mixing Engineer for Norman Whitfield and Whitfield warner Records from 1975 to 1984 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.232.11.2 (talk) 07:21, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Leanard, if that IP is yours then I'm afraid you have a conflict of interest with how the article is portrayed. As explained in my talk page, where are the sources verifying the content you want to add? I suggest you look for them because your word-of-mouth is not acceptable. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 07:47, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Leanard, I saw your credits at Allmusic and as a fan of Norman's work, all I can say without great engineers there would be no great producers. We know where the real work in a studio is done ;). However, IndianBio is correct in what he says above. We need to reference anything added to Wikipedia. So, if you have links that confirms what you are saying, load them up to this page, with any comments you wish to make and I am sure that somebody would be more than happy to be advised by you and add to the article. Thanks for your post. Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 08:27, 21 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Use of Linn drum machine edit

There's an anomaly there. The song was recorded in 1978, yet the Linn LM-1 wasn't released until 1980. Does the source actually say that this was the one used? Valenciano (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

The reference to Linndrum may be wrong. It wasn't released until 1982[1], and this record was released in 1978. Perhaps the author means Syndrum?[2] Jeremy Yeatman — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.224.75.5 (talk) 10:04, 29 May 2013 (UTC) Seriously, just listen to a Syndrum and a Linndrum and you will see it's a Syndrum, the 2 don't sound anything like each other, and as previously stated neither the Linndrum LM-1 or LM-2 were available for at least 2 years when this record was released.. The reference "Dave Thompson, author of Funk" is wrong, Dave Thompson is mistaken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.224.75.5 (talk) 15:19, 10 December 2013 (UTC) Jeremyyeatman (talk) 16:33, 13 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'm using this article to get some background for a piece of music based around this song. I concur with the comments above. The instrument is undoubtedly not a Linn Drum Computer which did not exist at the time. Further to that it sounds nothing like one and a Linn sounded nothing like the discussed sound. It is MORE than likely that it was a Syndrum... almost certainly was, but in the absence of video footage or photographic evidence (the mimed recordings of the time show neither Syndrum or Linn) it has to be said that the sound under discussion could have been produced by any one of the analogue keyboard synthesisers available at the time, eg Korg MS20, Oberheim OB series, ARP, Moog were all capable of making this sound. My personal suggestion is to change the words "Linn Drum Computer" to the far more generic "Drum Synthesiser" or even better "Synthesised Drums" which allows for the uncertainty about how the sound was played. "Syndrum" was/is a brand name and a specific device for which I have found no evidence. I do not edit Wikipedia but feel that in the four years since this inaccuracy was first mooted something to remove an error would be welcome. Lady Antebellum Cover edit

The country music group Lady Antebellum first single on the charts was of the same title - was that another cover of this page or a different song? Wfoj3 (talk) 00:08, 30 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
