Neutrality

• Shopping in central Loughborough has become a somewhat unpleasant experience in the last couple of years due to the rather severe car parking situation, as the town Council has opted to pursue a policy of discouraging car usage. This has been accomplished by means of reducing the number of available parking spaces, making those remaining "Pay and Display", and prohibiting return to a car park within one hour. As a result of this many people opt instead to travel to shops outwith the town centre or in the nearby city of Leicester. Bonnie from Big Brother lives here. Bonnie has now moved to Coalville.

• Charnwoord Borough Council's policy of discouraging car usage has had an impact on the footfall in the town centre, as restrictions and increases in charges on car parks have resulted in many people opting to travel to out-of-town retail locations or the nearby city of Leicester.

The Fair

The annual Fair is held for three days from the second Thursday in November. It is the last travelling fair of the season, having been established by Royal Charter, granted by King Henry III, in 1228. This charter also established the market which still takes place every Thursday and Saturday.

When the fair comes to town, a couple of very large fairground rides are plonked dead in the middle of the A6, and traffic is diverted around the town centre to accommodate them. In 2006 Market Place, Swan Street and part of The Rushes, i.e. most of the A6 within the town centre, were closed to traffic. 2006 differed little from previous years in this respect. --Breezecatcher 22:35, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Breezecatcher was correct at the time - there have always been roads closed because of the fair, including the section of the A6 that runs through the town centre. However, since this time part of the town centre has been pedestrianised, and the A6 has been re-routed. And so there are still road closures, just no longer affecting the A6. — Smjg (talk) 14:49, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

I have just come across the reference (section Arts and heritage) to the November fair. The two sentence paragraph could do with clarifying as it is unclear which week it is in, and in contrast to the first comment, has the fair beginning Wednesday:

Every November, a street fair takes over the centre of the town, closing some roads. The fair runs from Wednesday afternoon until Saturday night and offers rides, amusement arcades, food stands and games.

Largest independent cinema in the UK???

The Curzon has now been bought by a company operating a chain of cinemas in the local area; all the cinemas are now known as REEL (It's been referred to by this new name for some time now). Now this has happened (It's been like this for a while now) the cinema building itself has been totally revamped inside. As a result, I do not think the cinema is independent anymore since it is owned by a company which owns a chain of cinemas (I could be wrong, does anyone know anything else about this?) The Reel Website (http://www.reelcinemas.co.uk/) gives a short history of the group (currently 18 cinemas) as having grown out of Loughborough's Curzon Cinema in 2001 and being rebranded 'Reel' in 2005. It gives the HQ address as: Reel Cinemas Ltd, Head Office, 7 Cattle Market, Loughborough. Names of chain shops not needed

Can the fair citizens of Loughborough not do better than this? You need to tell me that Loughborough has a Tesco and a Thorntons? Are you all taking the piss here or what? You make the town sound like the most boring place on earth. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Dreadful!

I feel that one of the unique features of Loughborough is the Large number of shops that are not of the larger chains. I do not have a citation/reference for this it is a personal view of my feelings of the town compared to others of a similar size. Is this a relevant observation? As said - a list of chain stored does mark the town out as boring but the fact that many are unique does not. Stuarth42 (talk) 18:24, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

The name of small shops - especially for some reason those on Nottingham Rd are being added.

Unless I am mistaken none of these shops are more significant or noteworthy of the other 2500 businesses / organisations in Loughborough?

Pronunciation

The article said that Loughborough was 'more widely' pronounced /ˈlʌfˌb(ə)ɹə/ -- I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone pronounce the initial vowel as /ʌ/ rather than /ə/. I don't expect there to be references or citations, but could an example be given of a notable person from the area who would pronounce it like this? - Francis Tyers · 00:01, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

I believe the mispronunciation of Loughborough as 'Lugaburuga', or similar, is something that began with students from countries where English is not the primary language. It has, for a long time, been a standing joke amongst Loughborough Students. Aussies are always up for a good laugh! Lidskidder (talk) 18:10, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Some of the links that were recently removed have been present for over three years and several hundred edits.

I suggest that the consensus is that they are fine. The sites relate to Loughborough specifically and are free sites, have no advertising, etc .

If any review on external links is required that the first ones should be why the utube videos are selected rather than the other utube videos? Comments?

Tyers, so are you really saying the sites are not unique resources and only indirectly relate to Loughborough? Please substantiate your claim by providing where else the information can be found and which areas they mainly cover if they are only indirectly related. Incidentally would you, by the same reasoning go to the Loughborough Echo's wiki entry and remove it's links? Please note that it would have been usefull if you waited for comments before making unilateral changes to items that have withstood years of other peoples edits. OK I have a vested interest. That said, the whole page of all information could be subdivided down into seperate sections, many of the above don't have articles at the moment, and links that remain probably should. The entry A Loughborough based search engine is an incorrect description. Amongst other things it probably has the largest online history specific to Loughborough that I am aware of.

With reference to the link to Great Central Railway, this has a seperate stub, should therefore the text on the Loughborough page be reduced? I think so.

Yes, I agree that the text about the GCR should be reduced. Regarding your "inloughborough" link, don't re-add it, Wikipedia takes quite a poor view of site-owners or people with vested interests adding links. If your site is important enough, someone else will re-add it in the future. The local history section is interesting, and would make a great addition to the page. If you and your contributors are willing, we could just cut in that part of the site into a "History" section, and then use your site as a reference. How does that sound? I use inloughborough as a business tool in order to find information, photo's and maps. In paticular, the maps feature is useful as it informs you of the distance from a famous loughborough landmark. For my professional use I find it immency useful and would therefore suggest that the entry stay within wikipedia. Yes a part of the site is a search engine but there's a lot more. As the site informs the user about the Town of Loughborough and does not sell or advertise it's self why should it not have an entry?

You've missed the point, the aforementioned links are of interest to Wikipedia users as they contain information about a town they are trying to find information on. In spite of this, you have decided to vandilise the Loughborough, Leicester, Nottingham and Derby pages by removing relevent information then attempt to 'taunt' by thanking me for the suggestion. Why?

Wikipedia is not a repository of external links, anyone who just wants pictures of one of these towns could google images them. The same goes for "nightclub guides". Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. My actions were not vandalism and I was not taunting you. - Francis Tyers · 16:46, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

It also appears that the consensus is against you, and wiki guidelines also state that the consensus be followed in disputes, are you going to follow the consensus or ignore it?

Talking of the history of Loughborough, Why is the section blank? Surely it must have some history. I agree. Its nice to have an ATC but probably doesn't need a paragraph in the town page.

Even more surprising is the lack of a link to the Grammar school; Its big; old; near the town centre... I think it has an impact on the feel of the town? Distance to M1

"The M1's Junction 23 is 2 miles (5 km) west."

How somebody's managed to equate 2 miles to 5 km, I've no idea. But in any case, from what point in Loughborough does one measure?

Looking on Google, the A512 (Ashby Road) runs just over a mile from the motorway to the edge of the university campus, then almost another mile alongside it. So 2 miles almost reaches the Ashby Road/Epinal Way roundabout. But it is about 5 km to the town centre. Still, which figure should we use? — Smjg (talk) 23:28, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Inaccurate Business Information - Loughborough Town Hall Theatre, Venue and Arts Gallery

Dear Sir/Madam,

I've recently been informed by a colleague that the link below contains inaccurate information about our business. Loughborough Town Hall is a theatre venue, part of Charnwood Borough Council, which has featured an Art Gallery since April 2011. Please can you re-word the paragraph that states:-

"... Although it has no dedicated art gallery, fine pieces of sculpture can be found in the town's environs, including the ‘Sock Man’, a bronze statue celebrating Loughborough's association with the hosiery industry."

I don't mind how it's re-worded, but the facts are:- Loughborough Town Hall opened its Art Gallery, called 'Sock Gallery', in April 2011 and features a full programme of exhibitions throughout the year, including an annual Open Exhibition.
