Dates edit

The dates mentioned in the list are inconsistent/incorrect. Some mention dates before independence, some after. If dates before independence are to be preferred, the following are incorrect:

  1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Port Blair has been the capital at least since 1875 when A&N was established as a Chief Commissioner's province.
  2. Delhi: Delhi has been a Chief Commissioner's Province since 1911/1912.
  3. Jammu & Kashmir: Srinagar and Jammu were the capitals long before 1948. I do not know the correct date, but I have with me a book written in 1942 which mention those capitals.
  4. Madhya Pradesh: This is not an error. Nagpur was the capital of CP & Berar from 1903 onwards and probably should be mentioned in the Former Capital column.
  5. Tamil Nadu: Chennai (Madras) was the capital of the Madras Presidency from 1640 to 1947.

We need to be consistent and use all post-independence dates or use the correct pre-independence dates.

Also, see my comment of the classification of the NCT of Delhi at Talk:States and territories of India. --Manojb 05:51, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • The Capital od Andhra Pradesh before 1956, Kurnool is not correct. Kurnool is the Capital of Andhra State only. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.245.25.48 (talk) 19:24, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Needs serious work. edit

This list needs serious work to remain a WP:FL. The list has data which undergone many changes and seems very less informative now. The list gives out very less information apart some city names. --gppande «talk» 14:04, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Survey edit

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Support: Indian can be ambiguous in page titles, for example, List of Indian chiefs is really about American Indian chiefs. Comparatively, India clearly is relatively less ambiguous: confusion may arise whether it is British India, Mughal India, Republic of India or India of which period is in the context. However, by default, it means Republic of India, which is a country today.--GDibyendu (talk) 13:40, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • support: I'm the one who brought this issue to light on Nichalp's talk page, when I got a chuckle out of the name... it threw me for a loop because I didn't realize Native American's had formalized state and territory capitals... then I realized that I read the title from my US-centric bias. The new title is explicit in what is being listed.---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 16:15, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support: Ambiguity of the term Indian calls for the change, --KnowledgeHegemony talk 17:26, 27 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support:Yup, even we Indians need to get out of our sub-continental centric minds. Indians is very generalized word and more it can refer to Native Americans. Indians is also the term used in countries like Fiji and other Caribbean nations where sizable population is of Indian origin. -of India or -in India is less ambiguous. --GPPande 07:48, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Table messed up edit

Can someone who watches this page please fix the table. It doesn't look good for a Featured list to have an error causing the table to display incorrectly. Thanks, Matthewedwards :  Chat  01:32, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fixed by reverting a new user's edits (the info added wasn't relevant anyway). Dabomb87 (talk) 01:53, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The number of total states is 29 now. Andhra Pradesh has been split into two states, Telangana and a residual Andhra Pradesh w.e.f 2 June 2014. source: http://www.egazette.nic.in/WriteReadData/2014/158365.pdf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_union_territories_of_India

Also, this page can be deleted as it is a duplicate of following page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_union_territories_of_India

Done - I have updated the number, but this page cannot be deleted as it contains information about the capitals, which is not in States and union territories of India - Arjayay (talk) 08:13, 4 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Correct, this page specifically not only includes capitals, but focuses on them, giving to three different types of capitals. This is one of many lists of specific information on Indian states and union territories, all the ones listed in the box at the right of the article, from Template:Lists of states and territories of India. —Largo Plazo (talk) 14:02, 4 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Judiciary captials edit

I had a hard time trying to find any government source mentioning these. Tried a few of given sources, but they seem to support the lead and the notes, rather than the main list. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 18:04, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
