Beny Hinn

The "Cure for the incurable" book says that he gathered four million "in three days", and the rediff source relates one of the visits and says that only a few thousand people went. This doesn't look like a simultaneous gathering of several million people, it looks like they are just adding up all the people that showed up over the three days. See:

"More than 1.3 million attended the first night services; 1. 5 million came by the second night. The crowd swelled to 2 million by the third and final service, making the final night’s services the largest recorded in history for a healing service"[1]

"Millions attend his Holy Spirit Miracle Crusades each year. Memorable crusades have included audiences up to 7.3 million (in three services) in India, the largest healing service in recorded history" (Benny's About Us page[2])

"says Charles Babbler, who hosted the Benny Hinn miracle crusade in April, attended by an estimated 1.2 million faithful."[3] Daily Mail & Guardian, Johannesburg, South Africa, June 7th, 2000.(they link to the wrong page)

" When the service began shortly after dark, official estimates placed the number of people who had already found their place in the vast area at more than 1.5 million. As the 2,100-voice choir began to minister, the people kept streaming into the area, and by the time the service was less than an hour old, more than 2 million were lifting their hands and praising God. According to Yahoo! News and others Over 7 Million Attend Worship and Prayer Services at India's Festival of Blessings. “A crowd estimated in excess of 7 million people attended the Festival of Blessing services held over three nights this past week in India,” said Pastor Benny Hinn. [rediff] "the Festival of Blessings that concluded here Sunday night, the high-tech show attracted nearly a million people from all over India and some from abroad." [Indo-Asian News Service] [4]

This should be listed as a 2 million gathering, since that's the highest number of simultaneous people. Then we can point out that, over three days, a total of 4-5 million gathered. --Enric Naval (talk) 09:59, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

The claim in the official page of Benny Hinn is "up to 7.3 million (in three services)". ([5]). That means his claim is the sum total of 3 gatherings; not a single one.
Moreover, the following reliable news sources only give figures in the order of thousands. Remember, that these highly credible Indian sources (Times of India has the largest circulation among all English-language newspapers in the world.) are best placed to get the facts than "The New Yorker"
  • "Benny Hinn winds up India trip, raises political dust". The Times of India. 2005-01-24. {{cite news}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |publisher= (help)
  • "Benny Hinn winds up India trip". Rediff.. Arjuncodename024 11:21, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Enric Naval, thanks for finding those sources. I support your decision to list the gathering as one of 2 million people (also mentioning that in the three days, a total of 4-5 million gathered). Thanks, AnupamTalk 15:25, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

2010 Telangana Maha Garjana

What is exactly the problem with this edit? [6]. Did the BBC say that there were only 250.000 people[7]?

And could someone translate "12-15 lakh strong crowd" and "4.5 crore people" from the Times of India article? --Enric Naval (talk) 04:46, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Lakh means hundred thousands. 10Lakhs = 1million.
Reg BBC link, user never gave BBC link. I discussed with him on his talk page. He never gave the link. I think he made it up. I suspect it was a case of vandalism. We both agreed for this version version.
There are several newspaper links(referenced in the article) which said Organizer claimed 25lakhs(2.5millions) crowd at the meeting venue. No news paper contradicted his claim. Only one news paper mentioned there are 12-15lakhs of crowd(1.2 mil to 1.5 mil). Several news papers mentioned(referenced in the article) all the highways leading to the city were came to stand still due to traffic jam (some highways 20km and some highways 35 km of traffic came to stand still) because of the number of people trying to attend the event. Several newspapers reported that half the people who were trying to attend the event were stranded on roads due to traffic issues. News reports also said some people got out of vehicles and walked several KM to reach the meeting venue. Ramcrk (talk) 05:36, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
And 1 crore = 100 lakh = 10 million. -- Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 09:41, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

It's the page about the gathering ... not about the people who were stuck in Traffic jams. In that case you can also include all the people who want to attend the meeting but stopped becoz of other engagements. All the news items (except TOI) mentioned that the meeting arrangement is for 25 lakhs only not about the attendance. Telangana websites or Andhra websites are not reliable sourcesWkAdmin (talk) 11:39, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Infact the same roads are being blocked on all the days of Pranahitha Pushkara's. And on the same day of this meeting, Huge number of People poured in from many places for Pranahitha. How can you differentiate between the Garjana people and Pushkara people ??? HyderbadKing (talk) 13:38, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Pranahitha puskaram is 125km away from Warangal. Pushkaram was celebrated between Dec 6th and Dec 17th.[8][9] Why there is no traffic jams on dates other than on Dec 16th? Why traffic jam was on all roads around Warangal not around Kaleshwaram where Pushkaram is being celebrated? Its clear that traffic jam happened because of Telangana maha garjana meeting. Thousands of people were stranded on roads and could not make it to the meeting. All news channels reported it. Here is another link (in English) which says organizer of the even claimed there 25 lakh people(2.5 mil).[10]. According to this newpaper report (in Telugu) , all National highways towards Warangal were jammed with traffic by 4pm. Traffic stuck for 35km towards Janagao, 30km towards Huzurabad, same situation on road towards Khammam. Nobody can say its pro-Telangana news paper. See this video link which captured the crowd at the venue. Ramcrk (talk) 21:24, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Usually any pushkara festivals have huge crowds in the beginning and conclusion.[11]. You can't separate the crowds of Pushkara and Meeting . Apart from that what calculation is used to measure 25 lakhs based on traffic jam ??? . Nobody in the world ever measured people based on traffic jams yet. and you never answered that if this page is about gathering or people stuck in traffic jam ?? As of now TOI alone has mentioned how many attended the meeting .. rest of them are unreliable website links and meeting organizer words. so be it.HyderbadKing (talk) 05:39, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
My question to you is why there is traffic jam on all roads around warangal but not near any other town? Why there is no traffic jam near the Pushkar site of Kaleshwaram(at least not on Dec 16th. Your link says there was traffic jam at puskaram on friday the Dec 17 not thursday the dec 16th)? Also, Kaleshwaram is 130km away from warangal. So, its clear that traffic jam is caused by the vehicles who were trying to atttend the meeting(all the news papers, including which are biased against Telangana movement, reported the same). If there was no traffic jam, there would have been more crowd. Times of India(ToI) is known to show Telangana movement in negetive light. Anybody who followed ToI articles in last 1year can say that. So we have to take ToI numbers with pinch of salt. ToI says, crowd is between 1.2 mil and 1.5 mil at the venue. Organiser always says most optimistic things, He said there are 2.5 mil. My guestimate is there is a crowd of anywhere between 1.5 mil and 2.5 mil at the venue. Few hundred thousands stuck on traffic of at least 100km. (35km in Jangao route; 30km in Huzurabad route; 30km in Khammam route; several km in other smaller hiways). These are the numbers we have. I know we can not add the people stuck in the traffic as the number of people attended. But we should include the info about the traffic as side note so that reader will understand the popular response to the event. I hope you agree with me here. Ramcrk (talk) 07:44, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
I still can't understand about your estimates in a traffic Jam. You can estimate people in a meeting by the density per acre. But you can't imagine all the 100 Km of traffic jam is crowded completely with the meeting people . The meeting organizer always want his meeting to be successful . He can quote it wud be 1 million or 100 million. How can we take his words into consideration??? And on what basis you can tell Times of India is anti-Telangana . IS there any specific reason and proofs ?? Infact telangana people brand every news channel and News paper as Anti-Telangana. i see many times you call anyone or anything as Anti-telangana when they say against you ..even if it's truth. Telangana or no telangana ..accept the truth.HyderbadKing (talk) 12:08, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
1) We would never know the number of people stuck in the traffic. Thats why I just quoted the number of km and left at it. 2) ToI's bias can shown in the title of the article "KCR fails to roar at Garjana". I am not saying whole ToI management is biased. I can see that this reporter is biased. How can anybody put such title, when content of article says there 1.2 mil to 1.5mil crowd. At any standard even 1.2 mil is huge crowd. That's why I said we have take numbers from such biased reporter with pinch of salt. I have seen several such negative reporting in ToI probably from same reporter. Ramcrk (talk) 18:29, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree even 1.2 million is a huge crowd and not an easy task such huge numbers. and i don't agree TOI is against Telangana. The reporter said "KCR fails to roar at Garjana" not becoz of less crowd. He mentioned he failed in proposing future agenda or plans. I totally agree that the meeting was a big success in gathering crowds. But as per the agenda it was a flop. Nothing new was told and it was just like a routine meeting which are conducted in TRS bhavan. You can't deny the fact that people who cam to the meeting were disappointed. Infact i was also disappointed. HyderbadKing (talk) 06:34, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
KCR always talked about non-violent/Gandhian movement. There is nothing new there. Nobody expecting KCR to preach violence in the meeting. Choosing such title by ToI does not make sense. Reporter just want to find fault with KCR and wants to show Telangana movement in negative light. The reporter is clearly biased. Ramcrk (talk) 10:19, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Unreliable information

One of the examples in the article is: An estimated 1.7 million people gathered in Tripoli's Green square to protest NATO's bombing campaign in Libya on 1 July 2011 The source for this is definitely in favor of Gaddafi and cites the official figures by the state propaganda. Furthermore, 1.7 million is the entire population of Tripoli. Reuters lists the turnout as a more realistic 100,000: http://af.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idAFTRE75O1ER20110701?sp=true 93.32.245.207 (talk) 08:15, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Agreed. This 1.7 million number is complete nonsense. If you JAM packed that particular square with 4 people per sq. meter, it might hold half that number. There are absolutely no reputable sources to corroborate/support this statistic, and it should be removed. Kooosh (talk) 03:01, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Gathering above 50 million: 1. The previous Maha Kumbh Mela, held in 2010 in haridwar, was, before it occurred, estimated by the authorities to attract between 50 and 70 million people.[1][2][3]

Over ten million

  • An estimated 73 million people had gathered in Shanghai, China for the World Expo 2010, which started in May, 2010 and ran until the end of October.[1]
  • An estimated 60 to 70 million people gathered over 45 days in Allahabad, India for the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest gathering in January 2007.[2][3][3]
  • The pilgrimage to Sabarimala, a Hindu temple in Kerala, India, is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world with an estimated 45–50 million devotees visiting every year.[4][5][6]
  • An estimated 50 million people gathered over 104 days in Haridwar, India for the Maha Kumbh Mela between January and April 2010. More than 16 million people together took the ritualistic bath on the bathing ghats on April 14, 2010.[7][8]
  • An estimated 40 million people gathered over 41 days in Sabarimala, India between 15 November and 26 December 2008.[9]
  • In January 2001, Allahabad saw a gathering of more than 30 million [citation needed] people from all over the world in Kumbh mela in a single day called Mauni Amavashya. Kumbh mela is held every 12 years in the city of Allahabad. This is the record for number of people gathering in a single day.

At One Time or Over a Period?

There seems to be some real distincitions here as some are over an extended period (the Expo or pilgrimages totaling those who are there over weeks or months) while others are one day events (or several day events that the biggest number is listed: WYD and Benny Hinn). I think that most present at one time should be the base. If someone has times to include "most visited places in the world" as another page that would fit the world's fair along with fair competition like the pilgrims to the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the Great Wall, Disneyland, etc. which have large attendance numbers over time rather than one day. I think this is a different category as it has all the events over 20 million listed. June 22, 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers Championship Parade

There is no source for this statement and I question the attendance figure given here. The official count according to Cleveland Police Department is 1.35 million people, not 1.8 million. I believe whoever wrote this fabricated, especially as there is no source given.Evanvalken (talk) 02:18, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Cubs parade 11/f4/2016

There have already been 14 arrests from cubs fans throwing beer bottles at police, several street signs vandalized, and cars with windows smashed in. When we say "peaceful gatherings" do we mean they were organized based on peaceful principals, or peaceful throughout the gathering? If it's the latter then I don't necessarily think the Cubs belong on the list. Spitfire740 (talk) 20:36, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

0.00028% of attendees got drunk, and that makes it not a peaceful gathering? I guarantee there have been a similar percentage of violent incidents at any of these gatherings.2601:240:D200:F2CB:29C2:CC2F:843B:59DF (talk) 01:54, 5 November 2016 (UTC)
I believe this should be considered a peaceful gathering. My interpretation is that the events were organized with a peaceful purpose, so, a parade is peaceful, while in contrast a riot is not. Criminal behaviour is essentially inevitable in the world. Furthermore, I also believe that the Cubs Parade should be listed under Two to five million, considering it is more likely that the event is closer to 2 million than it is 10 million.

Napkineater (talk) 02:29, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

The greater issue is why this is being constantly removed and reinserted. Anyone with an issue should state it here.2601:240:D200:F2CB:29C2:CC2F:843B:59DF (talk) 01:54, 5 November 2016 (UTC)

Needs some other third-party verification, since it's the City of Chicago making the 'five million' claim itself with no other verification. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.38.79.235 (talk) 16:12, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Unreliable statistics

Most if not all of these figures are quite unreliable, even as estimations. I suggest a more rigorous standard of evidence should be used for the entries. The Chicago Cubs figure for example is wildly exaggerated and should certainly be excluded. aldiboronti (talk) 12:23, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Since all of Wikipedia is from stuff people wrote, we could claim any of it could be exaggerated. People who write stuff want it to be interesting so they might exaggerate. That said, the article could stand a paragraph or at least a sentence at the top mentioning crowd counting and how unreliable it is. See http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-cubs-crowd-estimate-20161104-story.html for a citation. However, we should not single out the Cubs Parade. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 18:26, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

This list is very incomplete. For example, it has no New York ticker tape parades, such as the huge parade for the Apollo 11 crew, and it lacks other major New York events such as the parade / gathering celebrating the end of World War II and New Year's Eve of 1999/2000. 2016 Karbala claim

The sources cited for the 2016 Karbala crowd are not acceptable sources. For example, this one claims that "45 Billion pilgrims" visited the site, which is obviously not true, considering that the population of the earth is < 8 billion. According to ABNA: "Media reported that the number of pilgrims this year has reached over 20 million from Iraq, Pakistan, India, Iran, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Turkey and elsewhere."[15] utcursch | talk 21:04, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

According to this source, the number is not for a single day (which is what this article is about): "There are countless people here at Karbala but the state-run media is giving estimates that 30 million pilgrims entered Karbala during the last 10 days." Do we have a number for a single day? utcursch | talk 21:20, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Officials confirm at least 40 million mourners gathered in Karbala to commemorate 40th Day of Imam Hussain (a). Maha.Alsaadi (talk) 15:32, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Needs a reliable source, which states that this number was for a single day. See above. utcursch | talk 21:20, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
