Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex - removed for now edit

The WP article for the Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex says that it holds 25,000 people and is used mostly for hockey. This would make it the biggest hockey venue in the world. However, I can't find any information saying hockey is actually played there. I'm going to remove it until there is evidence that the arena actually has a home team. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 23:02, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

New columns edit

I was thinking of adding new columns to the table possbily "Canton, Province, or State" and "Date Opened"? Any suggestions? --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 03:57, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bias edit

Isn't the text about arena sizes in Europe a bit North American-centric, whaddayathink? For me, as a proud European :-) it feels a bit biased at least... I mean, sure, the NHL is kind of the "de facto" top hockey league in the world, there's not much doubt about it, but the size of the arenas depend on a lot of factors. For example, Canada has 48 cities with more than 100 000 inhabitants, the United States has 266 such cities. By comparison, Sweden has 5 such cities, Finland has 6 (but the way to determine what is a "city" and not differs between these countries so the comparison is not entirely accurate). Do you really think that such a country can host so many 15 000+ arenas? Really, the fact that we (Sweden) have three 10 000+ is pretty good, looking at that list of 5 big cities...

Then you have Russia of course. They have 167 cities with 100 000+ population. But really, the economy of Russia cannot be compared to that of Sweden, Finland, the United States or Canada.

Still, I do agree that NHL is top of the line, it just doesn't "feel" so good with the attitude that this article is displaying. :-) /PerLundberg (talk) 19:52, 23 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't think it is bias. While there aren't too many cities in Sweden or Finland that could reasonably host a 15,000 seat indoor arena, Stockholm and Helsinki certainly could. In fact, both have arenas that are close to it. Both Hartwall Areena and Ericsson Globe are fairly new so a new, larger arena probably aren't going to be built anytime soon. In addition, the large indoor arena is mostly a North American thing. Many of the arenas at List of indoor arenas by capacity are from Canada and the US. The US has far and away the most while Canada is second with 10 entries. Patken4 (talk) 13:23, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It would be biased if we were making a value judgement about the "rightness" or "wrongness" of the situtation, or saying that North America is "better" than Europe. However, it doesn't say that. It coldly and rationally states a fact: most large arenas are in North America, not Europe. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 03:01, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, more specifically, I am thinking about the "despite their reputation as being the top European leagues"-type of statement... /PerLundberg (talk) 20:10, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Remove "current" restriction? edit

When I orgininaly wrote the list I included the restriction that only arenas currently with an ice hockey tennant would be included, so that readers could easily compare current hockey arenas between leagues, and countries. However, I now feel that by excluding historical arenas we are losing the ability to compare between eras, which is also of interest to readers. I will remove the restriction if no one objects. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 03:38, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Some arenas with no "hockey capacity" edit

I'm going to create a list here on the talk page of arenas that are missing a hockey-specific capacity. They can be added to the list when a hockey capacity is found. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 22:33, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rank Arena Capacity City Country Home Team(s) (League, Dates)
2 Quicken Loans Arena 20,562[citation needed] (general use) Cleveland   United States Lake Erie Monsters
defunct Rupp Arena 23,500[citation needed] (general use) Lexington   United States Kentucky Thoroughblades (AHL) (1996-2001), Lexington Men O' War (ECHL) (2002-2003)
defunct St. Louis Arena ~20,000 (circa 1994)[citation needed] St. Louis   United States St. Louis Flyers (AHA, AHL) (1929-1953), St. Louis Eagles (NHL) (1934-1935), Chicago Black Hawks (NHL) (occasional use, 1953-1959), St. Louis Braves (CHL) (1963-1967), St. Louis Blues (NHL) (1967-1994)
  • at the time of it's closing, St. Louis Arena held around 17,300 (17,318 if I remember correctly?) I remember it from the NHL Guide & Record Book from around that time. It could hold crowds of 20,000 in the early '70s, but the capacity was reduced to expand press facilities and install luxury boxes.88.102.148.34 (talk) 18:12, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Smaller arenas edit

Is it a good idea to add the arenas with a capacity below 15,000? I've added those, but the arenas were removed. 80.57.47.217 (talk) 13:14, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
