Length of Page

edit

This page is pretty long since there are 14 seasons. Would it be better to split the seasons into separate articles? JoeD80 (talk) 19:34, 26 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Many of the episode summaries are in the style of TV-guide teasers, and do not relate what actually happened. There are *supposed* to be spoilers here, not just coy hints. e.g. the fact that Pamela falls from a loft onto her stomach and loses her pregnancy is only vaguely alluded to in episode 5 of season 1. Much more direct descriptions are needed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.152.8.3 (talk) 13:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Split - I say split it into 14 pages, one for each season.--Jax 0677 (talk) 04:10, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Split – I agree with Jax 0677. 68.44.51.49 (talk) 19:30, 29 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Due to the new series Dallas on TNT possibly needing season pages soon as well because of today's renewal, we can't name the articles season 1, season 2, and so forth. How should we name them? By network? 68.44.51.49 (talk) 19:33, 29 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Comment I just split Season One from this article. Please feel free to comment.--Jax 0677 (talk) 18:53, 1 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've reverted the split for several reasons. In no particular order these are:
  • Dallas (1978 TV series) (Season One) is inappropriate capitalisation and incorrectly named based on our general naming practices. If no content other than the episode tables is included in the season articles, they should be named List of Dallas (1978 TV series) (season 1) etc. If additional content will be included, the name should be Dallas (1978 TV series) (season 1) etc.
  • Splitting isn't simply a matter of copying content from one article to another. Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure details the procedures to be followed to ensure that edits are properly attributed and this wasn't carried out.
  • This is a list of episodes, not a list of links to articles containing episodes. Splitting TV lists should be carried out as per the process detailed at Template:episode list#Sublists. Episode table content should be transcluded back here so that it is still a list of episodes.
  • Season links in the series overview table should lead to episode tables within this article, not to other articles.
As well as these problems, there were other issues with this and the new article. Again, in no particular order:
  • In the new article all of the episode titles were bolded. This is a violation of MOS:BOLD. Bolding was recently removed from {{Episode list}} after lengthy discussion specifically because of that. It was restored, inappropriately, with this IP edit.
  • The lead of both this and the new article fail WP:REDUNDANCY. ie. The article shouldn't start with "This is a list of".
  • The new article is missing references, or even a reference section, there is no infobox, it's uncategorised and so on.
  • Use of the hash (#) for the episode number violates MOS:HASH
  • As per convention, the season article should include {{Infobox television season}}.
  • Although not mandatory, episode tables are generally coloured in some way to differentiate between seasons. Try scrolling through the list quickly or click here and, without scrolling, tell me whether it's the same season as this episode. Similarly, |EpisodeNumber2= is generally used to identify the episode number within the season. For examples of both of these, see List of Castle episodes.
This article has been tagged for cleanup since January 2010 and issues should be fixed before splitting, as it's easier to fix them altogether, rather than trying to fix multiple separate articles that all have the same problems. I don't see there is a need for a separate article for Season 1, as it only has 5 episodes. Similarly, Made-for-television movies and reunions (1986–2004) can also remain. The aim of splitting is to reduce the bulkiness of an article, not to empty it completely and there just isn't content to sustain separate articles. for those two sections. --AussieLegend (talk) 09:18, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Comment - OK, I will agree that Season One and the last section should be kept. I think the name you're looking for is "List of Dallas (1978 TV series) episodes (season 1)". Someone said that at a minimum, the new article should have an edit stating where the article was split from, and I did just that.
If one is adamant about certain things being in the new article, then that person should fix the new article instead of creating a redirect and reverting the changes. If someone does not clean up the article soon, and there is no objection to splitting this article, splitting the article is what I intend to do.--Jax 0677 (talk) 22:27, 2 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
As the person splitting the article, it's really up to you to get it right. You shouldn't expect somebody else to do it for you. Splitting the article should be carried out as per Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure and Template:episode list#Sublists. If you're not willing to split the article properly, perhaps you shouldn't do it at all. --AussieLegend (talk) 09:04, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please read WP:INVALID. Many of the points (other than that Season 1 is too short) are not valid reasons for deletion, they are reasons to improve the article. If you want to delete Season 2, please take it to AfD.--Jax 0677 (talk) 00:36, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Nobody is trying to get articles deleted so WP:INVALID is invalid here. You're just being asked to split the seasons properly, or not do it at all. Splitting in the manner that you have been doing is irresponsible, as it creates a lot more work for editors who are trying to fix the article and you need to split the article in accordance with Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure and Template:episode list#Sublists. I see by your user page that you're an engineer in the vehicle industry. To put it in terms you're familiar with, what you're doing is putting a rocker cover on using silastic instead of bolting it down. Right now I'm working on fixing the article so that it can be split properly, so I'd ask you to stop splitting until that's completed. If you continue, any work that you're doing is going to be wasted because all of the articles will need to be completely rebuilt. --AussieLegend (talk) 02:46, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK, per your request, I put the episodes list back where it was, so that you can work on the cleaner, more "splittable" article.--Jax 0677 (talk) 04:00, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've turned the split seasons 2 and 3 lists into redirects back to the main list. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:46, 4 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

All of the work that I identified above has now been completed. The article has been cleaned up and all season content has been split to season articles as per Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure and Template:episode list#Sublists. I've also fixed/expanded {{Dallas (TV series)}} and transcluded the series overview table from here to Dallas (1978 TV series). The links there were wrong and it prevents duplication errors. --AussieLegend (talk) 17:13, 5 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Dallas on DVD

Boldly moved in accordance with alternate proposal. bd2412 T 14:20, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

– Bit of a disambiguation clusterfuck, pardon my French. A previous discussion makes note of the naming conventions used at the time that have shaped their current titles. However, I think that each article has a substantial amount of information beyond just episodes listings so that the titles can be reduced to the proposed moves listed above. I would move it myself, but I want to see if the new scheme checks out, since WP:TVSEASON is a little muddy as to how the parenthetical disambiguator should be condensed to if a year is disambiguating it (if that makes any sense, again, pardon my French). — Whisternefet (t · c) 08:25, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
