Neutrality and accuracy questioned edit

I question that this article belongs in an encyclopedia. Or that others like it based on race, national origin, religion, etc. belong in an encyclopedia. (Exceptions would be areas that are identified on maps such as "Chinatown", "Little Italy", etc.) I have several reasons for saying this, but I'd be curious how the editors justify it, firstly.

(As an aside, there seems to be an edit war between Malik Shabazz, who is removing what they term as "misdirected links and neighborhoods whose articles don't hint at African-American population", while anonymous editor 96.224.225.149 is immediately replacing them without explanation.) This list started as part of African American neighborhood, where it was a small list of historically significant neighborhoods. Since then it has become a monstrous list of neighborhoods with African-American majorities. I wouldn't oppose its deletion if somebody nominated it at AfD. — Malik Shabazz (talk · contribs) 03:44, 28 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm not listing it, but I'll follow the AfD discussion carefully. Looks like a serious candidate for deletion, on first glance. Unschool 06:47, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
The list is bogus. Two of the neighborhoods were listed, whose percentage of African-Americans in the population are only 15% and 25%. I removed them. And if they come back, they will be removed again - since I know every square inch of these neighborhoods and other neighborhoods in the vicinity, down to the last tree, street, trail and house. Set up criteria and an actual definition for the list - with references - then we'll talk. Otherwise, this page needs to be removed.

Enterprise NV : Enterprise NV does not belong on this list. According to the Wikipedia Article on Enterprise the (1) demographic is 8.1% African American, and (2) does not have the history as "Enterprise was formed as an unincorporated town on December 17, 1996" [[User: nelsoc41:47 PST June 11 2022 (UTC)Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page).https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterprise,_Nevadacharles a nelson (talk) 20:55, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

We need to eliminate all neighborhoods that don't have listed importance edit

If no one objects, I'm going to go through and add in a brief reason why each area is listed, and if I can't find one, just go ahead and delete it. Other wikipedia articles provide information. Dream Focus 02:38, 19 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Changed the format. Collapsing all the counties into a hidden list, I believe makes it more manageable. I notice while clicking on some links, that sometimes the only thing listed in the articles about an African American county are what street gangs are there. While gangs and crime are quite notable, shouldn't there be something cultural as well? Anyone from one of these neighbors, please find something else to mention besides the gangs and crime. How long? edit

I propose we remove every neighborhood from this list that is not sourced within the next x days, where x is at least 14 and at most 30. How long would be acceptable to people who believe this list is sourcable? Hipocrite (talk) 15:44, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

If you don't bother to Google for something first, then don't delete it. There is no time limit. If someone took the time to add it, you shouldn't just remove it without taking the time to make sure it needs to be deleted. I came back just now to add a few more bits to it. Bit by bit. It's not deleting something to remove it from a list. It's not the responsibility of the person challenging the facts to prove they are not true. The list needs to be blanked and restarted, and then held to strong sourcing standards - which is what I'll do, but anything that someone else sources before it get's blanked will obviously stay sourced. Formatting issues edit

I removed the "hide" formatting from all of the city entries. My thinking is that if someone comes to a page called List of African American neighborhoods, they want to see the names of African American neighborhoods. Hiding each city's list and making the reader click "show" to see each list doesn't appear to create significant benefits. Besides, displaying all the information out front may encourage editors to add sources, which they might be less motivated to do if they had to click numerous times just to display all the information in the article. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 08:44, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please do not delete edit

The article should remain to a fairly high standard and have enough sources, also keep in mind of the 2010 Census is ongoing to count the latest African-American population statistics to be revealed in 2012. But the article on "black" areas, sections or communities may be deleted by a wikipedian who may take offense or find the article redundant to academic research. It has happened to articles on every Mexican American and American Jewish sections or communities already, therefore allow this article on historical black areas or high percentage black cities to remain undeleted. + 71.102.7.77 (talk) 17:22, 12 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

How would an African American neighborhood be defined? Would a neighborhood be considered black even if it has sizable communities of other ethnic groups like Hispanics? I think that there should be a list of some form if it's possible, but the current list lacks neutrality and makes dubious claims. --Apollo1758 (talk) 20:53, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fixed lede edit

The lede was poorly written, and used a colloquialism, "chocolate city", which is not encyclopedic. Hope this improves it.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:02, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Move discussion in progress edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:African-American gospel which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 23:20, 18 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Immigrants (not American black) edit

Some of these neighborhoods are actually made up of black immigrants from overseas like Jamaica, Haiti, or Africa. — Preceding unsigned comment added by F3432432l (talkcontribs) 16:04, 23 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Scope of list edit

The name of this article is List of African-American neighborhoods (emphasis mine). African-American neighborhood is defined as a type of ethnic enclave found in many cities in the United States. By definition, then, a neighborhood is an area within a city. However, this article starts as follows: This is a list of African-American neighborhoods, containing cities, districts, and neighborhoods in the US that are predominantly African American. Why? If this is a list of neighborhoods, why does it include cities and districts? This list is a big mess in many ways, but I think a clear scope of what should be included would help a lot.
