The notability challenge is absurd! This person is an elected politician, a Welsh Assembly Member. There is a very substantial page about the National Assembly for Wales, therefore a piece about a member should be a legitimate subject for an article.Lenincymru2007 00:09, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Welsh Speaker?

Does Leanne Wood speak Welsh? According to the news reports, she is a Welsh learner, but doesn't speak Welsh. As stated about a minute in this BBC news report --Welshsocialist (talk) 22:01, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

I was surprised that Leanne Wood was only "known " as a republican and socialist. Surprised first of all at the socialist bit. As her party are socialist would it not be a fact that she is also? As for the republican part, would she not have self identified as a republican when contesting the leadership of her party? As for being a Welsh learner, in my humble opinion I think it will only be significant for the introduction once she has in fact learned the language. Clay More47 (talk) 14:36, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Revert

I added the information that Wood is the first non-fluent Welsh speaker to be elected as leader and referenced it. Daicaregos has reverted me and asked me to take it to talk. I'm happy to do so but I'm bemused as to why it was reverted. Clay More47 (talk) 11:35, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

On closer inspection it could be that Daicaregos failed to see that my reference was added in the section 'Leader of Plaid Cymru'. Should it have been included in the introduction? Clay More47 (talk) 11:45, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to the talk page. The reference added, citing Wood as a 'non-fluent Welsh speaker', was directly below the reference citing Wood as a Welsh-learner, and consequently redundant. The phrase “non-fluent Welsh speaker” does not seem to be encyclopaedic. Nor does the phrase “Wood is currently learning to speak fluent Welsh.”, which was unreferenced anyway. Whether her being the first woman to lead Plaid Cymru is notable enough for the lead is questionable, for two reasons. 1. had she not won the election, the remaining candidate was also female and 2. the article is about Leanne Wood, not Plaid Cymru. Introductions should have no need to include references, as they are a summary of the article, which should be sufficiently referenced already. Hope that clears things up. On her being the first woman leader of the party I would say it's important enough information to include. You are right, the article is about Leanne Wood, and Leanne Wood is the first female leader of Plaid Cymru. Important encyclopaedic information concerning Wood I would say. I do think the fact that she does not speak Welsh fluently and is the first leader of the party not to do so is important. Saying that she is learning Welsh gives no indication that all previous leaders spoke it fluently. Also, we can just say that she is the first party leader not to be fluent in Welsh which would get around the unencyclopaedic language. Thanks. Clay More47 (talk) 12:30, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

"Non-native" speaker of Welsh?

Wood...is the first female leader of Plaid Cymru and the first party leader to be a non-native rather than native speaker of the Welsh language.

Why Wood is called a "non-native" speaker needs clarifying. All I can see about her origins is that she was born in the Rhondda but nothing about her parents or her family origins. She appears to be a lifelong resident of Wales and on the face of it I (English) would have considered her Welsh by default.Cloptonson (talk) 18:19, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

She is Welsh. I think the article is trying to say she is the first leader of Plaid Cymru whose first language is English rather than Welsh. Daicaregos (talk) 07:16, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

If Ms Wood's experience of the Rhondda in the 1970s and 1980s is the same as mine, she would have primarily seen people speaking English except in very specific places such as chapel services.
