Remaining tasks edit

2 days left for finishing the month, and we still have some way to go :

  • Copyedit the geography and history section
  • Add more material to the conservation issues (mainly news items)
  • A map of the park needs to be drawn but I doubt I am up to the task - any takers ? A reference map is located at this URL.
  • Redirections for all associated proper nouns in Kaziranga NP article for the time being
  • Kaziranga disambig page
  • Stubbing redlinks, expanding those significant to Kaziranga - Robin Banerjee, Balaram Hazarika, Parbati Baruah, Queen of the Elephants

So, quite some way to go ! ray 23:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • A details in history section. In earlier time which dynasty(s) ruled over the area. Floods in the Park. Specially 1998 floods.Amartyabag TALK2ME 09:33, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Right, I have to start work now, and probably can only get back to the article Feb 28 night. I ve copyedited the flora. Amartya, I ve removed the Bheel picture, as the bheel was out of focus, and a shrub was in focus ! The links on google news archive should help with the last leg. did you see that the article is already rated B class ? that s good news. it probably means that with a little extra effort, we can get to GA class ! which is good enough for starting off ! ray 21:34, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I found these interesting links which might help us:

Assamese Name edit

The Assamese name should be 'কাজিৰঙা' not 'কাজিৰঙ্গা'. In English 'ঙ' is often transliterated by "ng". Bikram98 18:49, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Do I have the right transliteration? Kazirônga Rastriyô Uddyan - which would be something like [kaziɹɔŋa ɹastɹijɔ udːjan] in IPA. --SameerKhan 06:32, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
The IAST, IPA and Assamese versions of the name should all be saying the same thing. Now it says "Rahstriyo" in Assamese and IPA while IAST says "Jatiyo". Who can confirm verify the correct wording? This needs to be corrected urgently. -Deepraj | Talk 10:11, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Invasive Species! edit

Are the weeds really gone? I doubt it. FYI: "The alien invasive weeds have been a growing problem in Indian agriculture and environment. In north-eastern states, a serious invasion of exotic weed shiah-kanta Mimosa himalayana syn Mimosa rubicaulis has been reported in the world famous Kaziranga National Park, Assam. The weed originally used as a cover crop to prevent soil erosion in tea gardens has escaped into the forest areas. Spread by wind-blown seeds, the profuse growing weed has virtually taken over the entire game sanctuary. The weed, being very competitive has become successful in smothering local vegetation and creating food shortage to the herbivores inhabiting the forest.". DARE/ICAR ANNUAL REPORT 2002-2003, page 86 Check bottom page V of your reference.-Marcus 08:07, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

The removal of task was done in early 2005, and the link u provided was of 2002-03. According to them only 3% of the weeds left to be cleared. Amartyabag TALK2ME 10:18, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Before copyeding edit

This article may not be easily taken up for copyediting. The article should be presented conforming to basic English spellings and grammar, and I can see horrible instances of both. Please run a spell check.

  • legand
  • Local legand ... call the forest Kaziranga too many rendundant words. Can be summarised.
  • Assam (Rhinoceros) Bil what is the name of the Bill? -- Please add it along with the year.
  • Brahmaputra river --> river is never small case. It is either Brahmaputra, or Brahmaputra River.

Number of elephants in India edit

  • "The present population of wild elephants in India can be said to be in the range of 28,140 - 29,190." (Text + Annex 1. Wild elephants in India (2000)FAO (GOI experts)
  • CENSUS IN ELEPHANT RESERVES IN INDIA (2005)Min. of envir & forest2005 = 21,300+, 2002 = 20,696+

Image licence concerns edit

I've noticed a whole list of problems with the image licences. I've removed all suspect licences from the page. These are the problems:

  1. CC-BY-ND licences are uploaded as CC-BY-SA
  2. GFDL licence tag used instead of CC-BY-SA
  3. Incorrect derivative licencing information: Image:Coracias benghalensis.jpg. Source/author not properly attributed.and also monkey & elephants Done. Please replace images in Fauna.Marcus 17:55, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
  4. Permission obtained is not valid for audit purposes. The permission email should be sent to permissions AT wikimedia.org (See Image:IIT Main Building 1955.jpg for an example.
  5. Using a copyrighted cover page of a book on a page other than the article on the book is a copy violation.

Poaching news edit

FYI: Report: Poachers Kill Indian Rhinos By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: April 17, 2007 Filed at 4:24 a.m. ET, GAUHATI, India (AP) -- Authorities are searching for poachers who have killed six rare one-horned rhinoceros in the past four months in a protected game reserve in India's northeastern Assam state, the state's chief warden said Tuesday.

Two of the animals were killed in the past week inside the famed Kaziranga National Park, a 166-square mile habitat, said M.C. Malakar, Assam state's chief wildlife warden.

An increase in poaching has surprised authorities because only five rhinos were killed in 2006 and seven in 2005....According to government figures, 650 one-horned rhinos have been killed in Kaziranga in the past 40 years. Poachers Kill Indian Rhinos-Marcus 13:53, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

FYI:Poaching links to Osama Bin Laden edit

For the information of other I am providing this news article:

Poaching for bin Laden, in Kaziranga AMIT ROY, London, May 5: Poachers are hunting down animals in Kaziranga National Park in Assam not for personal profit, as happened in the past, but to raise substantial funds for Islamic militant groups linked to al Qaida, according to a disturbing report published today. ...

...The man explained how the trade was coordinated by agents across Assam — “Golaghat, Tezpur, Kamrup, Nagaon, these are the main places for agents.”They answered to a boss based in Dimapur in neighbouring Nagaland — “but everything tends to collect and move through Siliguri”. ...

...Three of those(poacher) who claimed to have been at the meeting two years ago said they knew exactly whom the agents worked for in Bangladesh: al Mujahideen, an obscure jihadist umbrella organisation governing a panoply of militant groups that had sprung up in Bangladesh in recent years.

...Two in particular, both banned by the Bangladeshi government, were in need of money and “eager to get into the racket”. One was Harkat-ul Jihad-al Islami, allegedly linked to al Qaida; the second was Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, whose leader, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, had joined Osama bin Laden’s World Islamic Front for the Jihad Against the Jews and the Crusaders in 1998...

Change infobox map? edit

I propose we use the newly created Assam locator map to show the location of the park. I have created a sandbox page to test. Please check and comment. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 22:30, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Since state locator maps are being used for other geographical articles, this article should be no exception. With the Assam base map, can the India base map (showing Assam) be also included at the upper left corner, like many other articles (eg Kolkata)?--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:44, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Same as Dwaipayan. Need to have India map in inset. Amartyabag TALK2ME 04:50, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions edit

Lead  Done edit

  • It's quite wikified. I recommend removing "Indian" from the first sentence. It's in India, so it's obvious it's an Indian national park.
  • For the final paragraph, I suggest it be reworded. When I first read it, I thought it was vandalism. Start the statement off with something like, "The name Kaziranga is derived from..." or similar.

History  Done edit

  • "In 1950, P. D. Stracey, the conservator of forests renamed the Kaziranga Game Sanctuary as the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary to get rid of its hunting connotations. In 1954, the government of Assam passed the Assam (Rhinoceros) Bill which imposed heavy penalties for rhinoceros poaching. In 1968, the state government passed 'The Assam National Park Act of 1968' declaring Kaziranga as a designated National Park. On February 11, 1974, the 430 km² (166 mi²) park was given official status by the central government. In 1985, Kaziranga was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for having some of India's most endangered animals, including the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses." - For better flow and correction of grammatical errors, I recommend changing this to:
    • The Kazirange Game Sanctuary was renamed as the Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 by P.D. Stracey, the conservator of forests, in order to rid it of its hunting connotations. In 1954, the government of Assam passed the Assam (Rhinoceros) Bill which imposed heavy pentalties for rhinoceros poaching. 14 years later, the state government passed 'The Assam National Park Act of 1968' declaring Kaziranga as a designated national park. The 430 km² (166 mi²) park was given official status by the central government on February 11, 1974. Then, in 1985, Kaziranga was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for having some of India's most endangered animals, including the world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses."
  • "Flooding due to the Brahmaputra distending its banks in 1973, 1988, 1996, and 1998, have led to significant losses in animal life." It's unnecessary to list the individual years. Also, I don't see anything in the reference about 1998. Since you're not going into detail about the specific incidents, I recommend the years being pulled out.
  • Last paragraph:
    • "An ongoing separatist movement in Assam by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has crippled the economy of the region." This needs a reference.
    • "1980s. [6]"; Wikify 1980s and remove the space between the period (full stop) and the citation.
    • "The park celebrated its centenary with much fanfare in 2005, inviting descendants of Lord Curzon for the celebrations, and combining the celebrations with the annual Kaziranga Elephant Festival.[6]" The reference doesn't mention the Elephant Festival, therefore the ref needs to be moved to after "celebrations".

Geography  Done edit

Fauna  Done edit

  • "The region is internationally renowned for having the world's largest population of the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros." Yes, we know. It's been mentioned. This article is beginning to read like the topic is the rhino as opposed to the park. It's mentioned in the lead, it's expanded here. It's not necessary for it to also be mentioned in the history.  Done
  • "The park has 9 of the India's 14 species of primates found." Spell out numbers under 10. Remove "the" from before "India".  Done
  • "Migratory birds from Central Asia that arrive here during winter include geese (Lesser White-fronted Goose), ducks (Ferruginous Pochard, Baer's Pochard), and storks (Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black-necked Stork, Asian Openbill).[27] Riverine birds include kingfishers (Blyth's Kingfisher), herons (White-bellied Heron), pelicans (Dalmatian Pelican, Spot-billed Pelican), shanks (Spotted Greenshank), and terns (Black-bellied Tern)." This needs to be rewritten. Something like "... during the winter include Lesser White-fronted geese, Ferruginous Pochard and Baer's Pochard ducks, and Lesser Adjutant, Greater Adjutant, Black-necked and Asian Openbill storks. Riverine birds include Blyth's Kingfishers, White-bellied Herons, Dalmatian and Spot-billed pelicans, Spotted Greenshank shanks and Black-bellied Terns." In it's current state, all the parenthesis look terrible. For consistency, other paragraphs of listed animals should take this same format; meaning instead of, for example, "red cat, black cat, gray cat", it would read, "red, black and gray cats".  Done

Administration  Done edit

  • First paragraph:
    • "The wildlife wing of forest department of the government of Assam..." This doesn't read right.  Done
    • "...is responsible for the administration and management of Kaziranga. The headquarters of the park is located at Bokakhat." → "...is responsible for the administration and management of Kaziranga, which is headquartered at Bokakhat."  Done
    • Titles are only capitalized when used formally (placed in front of a name).  Done
    • "The four ranges are: Burapahar Range, Baguri Range, Central Range, and Eastern Range, headquartered at Ghorakati, Baguri, Kohora, and Agoratoli respectively." → "The four ranges are the Burapahar, Baguri, Central, and Eastern. They are headquartered at Ghorakati, Baguri, Kohora, and Agoratoli, respectively."  Done
  • Second paragraph:
    • "The park receives financial aid from the state government as well as the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India under various Plan and Non-Plan Budgets." This doesn't read right. Is there something missing around the comma? Government shouldn't be capitalized.  Done
    • US$ 100,000 → US$100,000.  Done
    • NGO → Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) *Unless this has been done already in the article and I've just overlooked it. Citation needed as well.  Done

Conservation management  Done edit

  • First paragraph:
    • "Twelve acts including the Assam Forest Regulation of 1891 and the Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2002 are in effect for wildlife protection of the park." → "12 acts, including the Assam Forst Regulation of 1891 and the Biodiversity Conservation Act of 2002, are in effect for wildlife protection of the park."
  • "...Bangladesh connected to Al Qaida. [35][36]" Remove space between period and reference.
  • Third paragraph:
    • "Water pollution by way of run-offs from pesticides from tea gardens, and a petroleum refinery at Numaligarh are posing a hazard to the ecology of the region." Comma between "Numaligarh" and "are".
    • "Grassland management techniques like controlled burning are effected annually to avoid forest fires." Should have commas before "like" and after "burning".

Visitor activities edit

  • "man-animal" → "man/animal". (I believe this is the proper format). It means conflict with man with anima and vice versa.Amartyabag TALK2ME 10:42, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Citations. Put [citation needed] tag where required

====References====   Done

  • 3 is the same reference as 16. They reference the same statement (biodiversity hotspot), so one simply needs to be removed. You can source it either in the lead or in the body. Just be consistent through the article. Either have all information first appearing in the lead sourced there as appropriate, or have only information sourced in the body. GA Hold returned edit

It was determined at WP:GA/R that the hold for this article should be returned to give its editors a better chance to address the concerns. The hold has been restored, with the original expiry date. See the archived discussion for more information. Additionally, I have also taken over reviewing duties from the prior reviewer. I have checked over the article, and agree with all of her points. If all of her requested changes are made, let ME know at MY talk page that you need a final review, and if the changes have been made which make the article comply with good article criteria than I intend to pass it. Good luck, and drop a line at my talk page if you have any questions. --Jayron32|talk|contribs 01:38, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Small mistake edit

The caption going along with the picture of the sign with the number of animals is not 100 % correct. The sign is not at the entrance to the park, but in the tourist complex on the other side of the highway. Somebody should fix it, I just don't know what to write instead. --Peter Andersen 22:44, 13 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

GA Failed: Hold expired edit

The original hold on this article has expired. There are still many fixes (see LaraLove's notes above) that need addressing. The Fauna section needs some serious clean up. If you feel this review was not handled correctly, please feel free to request remediation at WP:GA/R. Rhinoceroses or Rhinoceri? edit

Isn't the plural of Rhinoceros Rhinoceri, not Rhinoceroses, as used in the article? I've heard it used commonly, and it isn't like we never pluralize with an "I", anymore (Octopi and cacti, for example), so should we not change this?--Dark Green (talk) 08:55, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

I removed link spam advertising hotel accommodations and transportation services from the body of the article. Parabolooidal (talk) 19:45, 2 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

I removed the spam links again. It's against the rules of Wikipedia to add advertising or hotel booking links to an article. It's also against the rules to add external links to the body of the article. Non-advertising external links should go under a section called "External links". 'Citation Needed' Tags are Near Vandalism Level edit

This article has 82 citations from 51 sources, and there are still 31 Citation Needed tags. By my count, I think there are only about 100 un-cited sentences in the body of the article. I just came by to read about the park, and found the article nearly unreadable. Does it really add that much value to have a RS for "Encroachment by people along the periphery has also led to a diminished forest cover and a loss of habitat," something true of virtually every protected area worldwide? What possible benefit does a reader get from two cites for the railway station and airport, or for the long-lat coordinates? This feels more like vandalism than encyclopaedic editing. Kaziranga National Park edit

Kaziranga National Park is a protected area in the northeast Indian state of Assam. Spread across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, its forests, wetlands and grasslands are home to tigers, elephants and the world’s largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. Ganges River dolphins swim in the park’s waters. It’s visited by many rare migratory birds, and gray pelicans roost near Kaziranga village

Tiger density edit

Two consecutive statements at the article beginning are contradicting. "Kaziranga is home to the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world" and "now the highest tiger density is in Orang National Park, Assam". So which park have the highest density of tigers? אביהו (talk) 14:54, 3 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
