What does wilderness Park mean? edit

Kachemak Bay article includes: Kachemak Bay is home to Alaska's only state wilderness park, Kachemak Bay State Park. So does this mean Kachemak Bay State Park is the only state park that has wilderness or is it referring to Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park that is not adjacent to Kachemak Bay? I'm not trying pick it apart, but am considering rewriting and was also considering including Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park. Is Kachemak Bay State Wilderness Park to far from the bay to be appropriate in this article? Sunbelt alaska (talk) 01:21, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

What does "Kachemak" mean? edit

" The name derives from a Yupik term meaning "large cliff by the water". It was previously referred to as Chugachnik Gulf."

  • I have never heard this before, but I have been told numerous times that it means "smoky bay". The fact that a plethora of businesses in the area have this phrase in their name would tend to support this, but that is by no means a source. Hence, I removed this content from the article as it is unsourced. I'll try to find something solid one way or another. Beeblebrox (talk) 06:29, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
According to GNIS ka means "water","che" means "cliff", and ma is an intensive suffix meaning "high, great, large". --Aconcagua (talk) 07:54, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Interesting. I wonder where the whole "smoky bay" thing comes from then? Beeblebrox (talk) 08:03, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I believe one sourse for "smoky bay" is "A History of Kachemak Bay: The Country, the Communities by Janet Klein" 1987. It's origins would be related to the coal seam fires that burned for many years in the bluffs above Kachemak bay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sunbelt alaska (talkcontribs) 23:05, 10 April 2011 (UTC) Sunbelt alaska (talk) 23:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

In the interim I have tried to verify that meaning. I asked some Natives and they all said it means "Smoky Bay" but I couldn't find it written down anywhere. If you have a book that verifies it then by all means it should be added to the article. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:15, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
The book is not in hand, but I will when I catch up to it, after this summer.Sunbelt alaska (talk) 04:45, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
