Shinpan or shimpan? edit

Before a "p" the "n" sound is pronounced (and written in roman characters) as an "m" so shimpan is generally regarded as correct. May be worth making a redirect page for though -- I leave it up to you... Nashikawa 20:29, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

It's not true that the "n" sound is written as "m" before a "p", this is pretty much obsolete, see the Manual of Style. "m" is only preferred in well-known names such as Asahi Shimbun. A google on 'sumo shimpan' returns about the same number of hits as 'sumo shinpan', so I'm not sure which is preferable. What do you think? --Auximines 09:07, 26 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Not a sumo specific term edit

As far as I know, the term shimpan is not specific to sumo, but can be applied to almost every other gendai budo that has competitions. Think kendo, atarashii naginata, judo, karate, iaido... I think this page should be rewritten to reflect that. --Tinctorius 09:56, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
