Contemporary reports in Motor Sport mag. seem to call him Jack as well...but I haven't checked them all as I've used up my article 'allowance' for the time being.

Since Motor Sport, Small, FORIX and Mike Lang's Grand Prix! all refer to him as "Jack", I would not object to the article being moved to Jack Lewis (racing driver), per the original proposal. But if we decide to go with the redirect option, I think just "(racing driver)" would be a sufficient disambiguator until the American driver gets an article.
