Talk:Governorates of Iraq

Naming edit

Why switch the names to "governorate"?

  1. governorate is the official Iraqi naming
  2. this is more in line with translation of muhafazah in other arab countries
  3. the term province is usually reserved for wilaya

Discussion edit

I would favor switching, to have an all-arab solution Tobias Conradi 06:52, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Apparently some people have been changing most of the titles of individual governates to province already. I wonder what made them decide to do so? --AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 11:35, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Vote edit

Agree The arguments in favor of the name governate make sense and I simply haven't seen arguments in favor of the name province yet. --AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 11:35, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Do other countries have separate articles for subdivisions? I don't see the point of this one as there doesn't seem to be any difference. AndrewRT 12:17, 13 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
When I meant difference, I should have said I dont' see much information within "subdivisions" that isn't in "governorates". I was just trying to tidy up the categories but know you mention the other countries I agree they should be kept separate. Besides another subsection - regions of Iraq will soon be needed!! Kirkuk edit

Is there a source for the name change from At-Tamim to Kirkuk? Being so controversial we should enforce that policy here. AndrewRT 21:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

As-Sulaymaniyyah edit

Somewhere I can see As-Sulaymaniyah and somwhere As-Sulaymaniyyah. Does anybody know the correct spelling? Mountleek (talk) 00:31, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nineveh and Dohuk edit

I believe we need to update to what is the current borders of certain governorates. For example, the Akre region no longer belongs to Nineveh. Instead, it's incorporated with Dohuk [[1]]. Chaldean (talk) 08:38, 24 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

3 years and no answer, so I might as well do it myself. Chaldean (talk) 11:52, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Halabja edit

This page is at least inconsistent. The text says that there are 19 governorates and 19 are listed in the bulletized list. However, the map shows only 18; there is no Halabja. Actually, I do not think that the Government of Iraq accepts Halabja as a governorate ([| Iraqi MOFA]). Instead, it is considered a part of As-Sulaymaniyyah. Regions of Iraq edit

Regions of Iraq redirects here, but only the Kurdish region already established by §117 in Section 5 of the Iraqi Constitution is mentioned in passing. Have no other federal regions been formed subsequently? — Christoph Päper 11:45, 10 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Halabja edit

The maps lacks the province Halabja

Map of subdivisions I uploaded edit

I guess this map would be useful to be posted here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IraqAdministrativeMap.png Tomislav Addai (talk) 16:18, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Looks pretty cool. Is it upto date as of like recent years? If so, any info of the 'sub-districts' within each district within each governorate? jlog3000 (talk) 16:20, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Halabja Governorate edit

The official number of Iraqi governorates is still 18, it was only recognized as a governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq(1), and doesn't even have a postal code number or an ISO code like the article claims.(2) The council of minister approved a bill to turn it into a governorate in 2013,(3) and once again in 2023,(4)(5) but in the Iraqi constitution, the only entity that has the privilege to declare it as a governorate is the Council of Representatives of Iraq, and so far they have only delayed the hearing for this case numerous times due to disagreements from major Shia parties.(6)(7)(8)(9) Lolekek (talk) 12:15, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey! I understand what your saying but, halabja is a governorate according to how iraq defines it, Being a governorate isnt about recognition if it wasnt done illegally! Kirkukturk3 (talk) 18:52, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Kirkukturk3: How is Halabja a governorate according to how Iraq defines it? Can you provide sources for your claim? Because I provided over 10 that prove otherwise. Governorates and other forms of administrative divisions HAVE to be approved by the highest legislature, which in the case of Iraq is the Council of Representatives, and they have yet to approve a bill to recognize it, and not having recognition means missing out on benefits like reserved public budgeting, having allocated seats in parliamentary elections, having the governorate as a birthplace, Halabja lacks all these quantities and as such it can not be declared an official governorate. Whether KRG decided to approve it or not, it should be in a different article which I did mention in Halabja Governorate.
If you would like to revert my edit then at least list some sources, and removing the part regarding ISO and postal codes was not a well mannered decision, since as I listed here, Halabja does not have any reserved code. If you want to make a settlement, then you could mention that Iraq has 19 governorates, and 1 which is partially recognized. Lolekek (talk) 22:22, 17 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

About the new clickable map edit

Can it be a bit smaller? On mobile, It will randomly send you to Nineveh Governorate even if you didn't click on it. Kirkukturk3 (talk) 10:45, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
