Romaji transliterations

Overhaul

Hey all. I just came across this yesterday, and it is in need of a major overhaul, which I am now going to begin. Since it's such a major change, I thought I might outline my intentions here, and start a mini-discussion as to what sort of stuff should be here, what sort of structure it should take, etc.

The main categories of things I think belong on this list are:

• Historical titles and terminology, like koku, han, Shogun, and daimyo
• Major battles and wars
• NOT People, as that doesn't quite constitute a Glossary to my mind.
• NOT periods of history, as there's plenty of lists and sidebars for that
• Only a very limited number of places - the capitals, perhaps just those.

Finally, while the concept of what does and does not count as "historical" is definitely up for grabs and somewhat controversial, I am going to attempt to avoid most 20th century stuff. Modern Japan is just not my specialty, and I am afraid that once we allow WWII and beyond to be included, those subjects will overwhelm the list... In any case, do what you will.

As with any article, please feel free to contribute, to question my changes, to even undo them if you really feel I've described something wrong or that it doesn't belong in the list... LordAmeth 02:23, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Here's a suggestion: For huge groups like the biggest clans, one entry for e.g. Tokugawa with a link to a page having a list; similarly one entry for Ashikaga etc. So they won't be absent from the glossary, nor will they take up excessive space.

Cleanup

I made the following changes: 1) Decapitalized most terms, in particular the names of governmental posts. I did this after consulting the Cambridge History of Japan. If they write shogun, shikken and kanrei using the lower case, I think so should we. Left some terms like Gosanke in the upper case even if both lower and upper case forms can be found with Google.

2) Consistently italicized Japanese terms, except shogun and daimyo, which are now English. For the same reason I removed macrons from these terms.

3) Removed redundant links. This part will require more work, which I plan to do in a couple of days. There are certainly mistakes, but given time they cam be fixed.

4) Made other changes, which I believe to be uncontroversial.

I believe this to be a page worth being improved and somehow publicized. I discovered it only begause Fg2 told me about it. I wonder if there is some way to make readers interested in Japanese history aware of its existence. urashimataro (talk) 01:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
