Something is clearly missing from this account of his military experience, that would make a conformist black man, who has been accomplished enough to reach the rank of 1st lieutenant, commit AWOL because an immigrant refused to shine his shoes. A part of this story is obviously missing. Stevenmitchell 03:08, 22 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Where on earth did you get the idea that Schuyler was "a conformist black man"? 74.72.23.106 (talk) 14:45, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Black Empire edit

Schuyler did not collect _The Black Internationale_ and _Black Empire_. The collection was compiled in a 1991 Northeastern University Press Edition edited by Robert A. Hill and Kent Rasmussen. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.193.154.98 (talk) 21:08, 10 December 2006 (UTC).Reply

Political views edit

A 2012 article in The Weekly Standard suggests that the biographies which suggest that Shuyler "shifted" to having "far right-wing views" may have been written with a left-wing bias and the claims were made for no other reason than to criticize Schuyler's politics by drawing false conclusions from his opposition to communism (which he always had) and support of limited governments and individualism. The left-wing biographer categorizes Schuyler's support of Barry Goldwater portrays Goldwater as if he was a racist (which he was not) because Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act, and presents Schuyler's support of Goldwater as self hatred. The reality was that Goldwater and Schuyler both supported voluntary means of progressing the status of African Americans, and hiring the best person qualified for the job rather than practicing institutionalized racism of always hiring blacks over whites, even when an individual African American worker is less qualified, which is what the Civil Rights Act entailed. Schuyler's criticisms of the civil rights act was not far right-wing politics, but a part of his long standing support of individual rights and free market capitalism. Individualist capitalists felt that racist business owners would destroy their businesses on their own with their hiring practices, and the government did not need to force them to pretend to adopt views they didn't have, as their businesses would be destroyed by public knowledge of their racism, as civilized, intelligent people are not willing to do business with racists or any other irrational bigots. The left-wing biographer also portrays Schuyler's anticommunism as part of his supposed "self-hatred" and anti-communism as "far-right wing paranoia" and "racism", despite Shuyler's reasons for opposing communism.--128.227.98.17 (talk) 23:42, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Fake quotation edit

"Because of his close association with Mencken, as well as their compatible ideologies and sharp use of satire, Schuyler during this period was often referred to as 'the Black Mencken.'"

Nobody referred to him by that phrase, which is why there is no citation, and people did not capitalize "black" at the time, any more than they capitalized "white." 2603:7000:B23E:33EE:2D9E:1D0D:72C8:D4DC (talk) 09:15, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
