This article is not much more than a stub, and should probably be merged, along with the cruising chute article, into the spinnaker article, since all these sails are similar (lightweight nylon, not attached long the luff, deployed only for the appropriate downwind points of sail). scot 21:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

My personal experience as a long-time cruising sailor is that the gennaker was developed at least by 1980. I had a gennaker cut for my 35 foot Niagara in 1979. It was colorful like a spinnaker and was 1.5 oz. nylon. It attached to the tack by a spinnaker pole. It was also referred to as a cruising spinnaker by the sailmakers. My cruising ground was the Pacific Northwest, the San Juans and the Georgia Straits, so perhaps this style and usage of the gennaker is specific to this region. The description and characteristics contained in the article vary somewhat from that of my experience. One reason I was concerned about the date is that I am writing a novella based on my sailing experience that references "my" gennaker. My father had a gennaker on a Cape Dory by March of 1981. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnphantom (talkcontribs) 05:57, 22 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
