This story is famous for having been written to match an already painted magazine cover illustration. I'm not sure of a link sourcing this claim, but I have read it several times in different places.

Vance himself recalls this story in The Jack Vance Treasury. as The exact scene as depicted (with a second vessel in the same class in a nearby orbit) is described in the story.
