New Page Layout & Contents edit

If you came to this site before, you can see that it has now been vastly expanded and updated. I chose to place the character descriptions within the main article rather than create a separate page for each character in the series. I think this makes the information more accessible to the average Wikipedia browser and avoids the creation of large amounts of stub pages. However, I did format the article so that each character has their own section, making it so that you can access them through section links. Enjoy, and happy editing! - Runch 21:22, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Section Headings edit

Not that this has been a problem so far, but please do not change the section heading titles - they are linked to internally on the individual pages for the Garrett novels. Thanks! - Runch 23:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Omnibus Publishing Info edit

I need to find it to get the exact, but I had a copy of The Garrett Files, the omnibus comprised of the first three books as early as the late 80s and no later than 92. I did see a later copy in the late 90s of the same collection with a different cover. When I find the first copy, if I have it still, I will change the date for that omnibus. Anyone else who has that copy, feel free to beat me to the punch. InMyHumbleOpinion (talk) 06:19, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

More General Info edit

I think there should be both some additions and some changes to the format:

  • Addition- Within the same section, but before the list of books, a general explanation of the naming motiff. Not just that metal is always involved and that an emotional bent- bitter gold hearts, old tin sorrows- is usually present, but also where they originate and the exceptions. I need to reread, but I know that by the middle of the series, Garrett used the title as a phrase in his internal musings (need to double check the first few to see if he did that). The two exceptions I know off the top of my head are 1) The Dead Man beat Garrett to the punch when he declared that they must end these Red Iron Nights and 2) that Garrett actually shared is thoughts about being like faded steal heat with others in that book.
  • Addition- Possibly in the same section, possibly in it's own section, more info about the writing style and devices that the books share, e.g., first person narrative, lasting changes in characters, early use of near/fake vulgar language ("fugginay") done away with later.
  • Change/Revision- A number of the character descriptions look like they can be done better. I'm as much of a fanboy as anyone, I wouldn't be interested here otherwise, but I think some aspects of the descriptions are too far away from encyclopedic.

What do people think? InMyHumbleOpinion (talk) 06:35, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Characters edit

A thorough update of the characters section seems necessary to make the following changes

  • Add more characters like Kip Prose etc.
  • To update the information about various characters in light of new releases.

Sarge edit

I think that the reappearance of Sarge in Red Iron Nights is a mistake on Cook's part, he forgot that he killed him off. This is not a lores wiki where we find ways to make the stories work, we just state the facts. Can anyone show any proof that the new Sarge is a different one? Hatty issue edit

"Despite the fact that Garrett is consistently shown wearing a hat and long coat on the covers of most of the Garrett P.I. novels, within the novels he does not dress in this anachronistic fashion, and he very rarely remembers to wear any form of hat, even when it rains."

The part about hats is absolutely incorrect.

Garrett does not forget to wear hats. From Cold Copper Tears, at the beginning of chapter 43, considering disguises:

"And everybody who knew me knew knew I'd wear a hat only when I had to keep from freezing my ears off.

I picked the most absurd topper, one people who knew me knew I wouldn't wear at swordpoint."

I vaguely recall another instance where his distaste for hats was expressed more empathically, but the passage escapes me at the moment. Should hit it soon, though, rereading the series yet again.

Wicked Bronze Ambition merged edit

Following the closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wicked Bronze Ambition, I have redirected the title "Wicked Bronze Ambition" to this article. The deletion discussion closed with a consensus to "merge"; however, I was unable to find anything substantial to merge in the original article. If any editor feels I have missed something, I encourage them to be bold and merge the content themselves. The old article is still viewable in the page's edit history.
