Hi, "ElephantEars2008". Your edits don't appear to an outside observer to show any actual interest in the term itself (which is already covered here anyway), just an obscure book by that title that was published by "Elephant Ears Press," which I am sure is not a coincidence. Galley proofs are not advance reading copies

Galley Proofs and advanced reading copies are not the same. They are both specific publishing terms which should remain intact because they help chart and define the nature and course of publishing history. With more and more courses in publishing growing up, students should be presented with the differences bewteen terms when they go online to make research. Your logic DreamGuy would see 'Politicians' become 'Politicos' and vice versa. Why not call a great white shark a killer whale, they're both big fish wth large dorsal fins which attack and devour their prey? Suggestions

Galley Proofs and ARCs are not the same thing. Similar, sometimes one is used for another, but they're not the same and shouldn't be combined under one heading.

I would suggest that there is some confusion over the purpose of a galley proof. The galley proof has one primary purpose, that being to check that the compositor has set the copy accurately and that the physical type is free of defects. (Type metal is comparatively soft so type did get damaged and sometimes individual pieces did get put in the wrong case after use!) Once a defect free galley proof was available, publishing houses could send them to editors and authors for a final reading and corrections to the text before the type was fixed in the chase for printing.

The only part of the final layout of the printed document fixed at the galley stage is the measure - the length of the printed line. This was determined by the setting on the compositors stick and would be difficult to change later without resetting the copy.
