Etymology edit

This article says: There are several theories concerning the origin of the name Galata. According to the Italians, the name comes from Calata (meaning downward slope) as the neighbourhood is sloped and goes downwards to the sea from a hilltop. This etymology is correct! (others are not!)Böri (talk) 10:39, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

It has been noticed that in several articles about Istanbul and its districts, history and places, you have a biased opinion against anything Greek. It makes sense that you are attempting to... validate the (more recent) Italian version of the etymology when its know that this area has been named Galata long time before the Latin Empire. Just makes lots of sense. :-) --85.75.169.220 (talk) 15:26, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Move request edit

There is no quarter called Galata in Istanbul, as the place is called Karaköy at present and there is an article for Karaköy in WP. This article should be redirected to Karaköy. Galata Köprüsü (bridge) and Galata Kulesi (tower) are the names of a historic bridge and a historic tower in Karaköy, but a place called Galata does not exist any more. Neither is Galata a common name for the modern place in English. (If it had been so we should have needed to redirect Karaköy to Galata; which is not the case.) --E4024 (talk) 15:39, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

You may want to copy some of the historical information from here into that page. After that I suggest you go ahead and do the redirect. You don't have to request it; just change the page to "#REDIRECT <target page wikilinked" as shown at WP:REDIRECT. II | (t - c) 02:13, 13 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. My friend Alessandro, a Genovese son-in-law of Istanbul will do that. --E4024 (talk) 08:09, 13 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • No, this article should stay. There appears to be a historically rich place of encyclopedic value called Galata, and should have its own page. Perhaps there should be a chapter in this article called Karaköy, like when in the Galata timeline it was established, with a link to the Karaköy page? I can definitely see the political complications - those East of the Galata bridge wish it called Karaköy, those west Galata. IGalata Bridge - I mean honestly). Where is Galata you ask? it is " located at the north side of the Golden Horn, towards Taksim Square. Galata was surrounded by walls, constructed by the Genoese, until the 19th century. These walls started at Azapkapi near the Golden Horn. The Galata Tower was the northernmost observation tower and the walls go down to Tophane from this point." at least According to this Turkish Tour Guide.....Perhaps someone could tell Burak Sansal that he needs to change his tours to Galata and call them tours to Karaköy? The page should stay - just because Pompeii or the Iroquois Federation is called something else currently - does not mean they never existed nor do not have encyclopedic value...Feel free to delete all references to Galata in the Turkish WikiPatriot1010 (talk) 06:35, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

@Patriot1010: Any idea what the Galata bridge unites? If you want a Galata article here begin eliminating all the info about the modern quarter, turn the article into a history piece. --E4024 (talk) 21:41, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pera is (was) Beyoglu (To the concerned editor) edit

Yes, Pera is Beyoglu. (Who says it is not?) Karaköy (Galata) is a part of it. Write Pera in WP and it redirects you to Beyoğlu. You say the same thing with me but do the wrong edit. I do not know why: Do you feel there is an obligation to use a Greek word in every WP article on Turkey? It (Pera) is already used in Beyoğlu article as the "old" name of the district and has nothing to do here. So I have reverted your edit. --E4024 (talk) 23:13, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is correct. The relation between Galata and Karaköy is the same as that between Constantinople and Istanbul. Writing about "the genoese citadel of Karaköy" would be an anachronism, but a topographic article about the neighborhood must have the name Karaköy: otherwise we should rename Bakirköy to Makrohori, Kumkapi to Kontoskalion and Yesilköy to San Stefano. :-) Of course, the title of the history paragraph dealing about the byzantine/genoese age can bear the name Galata, and if someone wants to write an history centered article about the quarter in the byzantine and levantine age (as Oliver Jens Schmitt superbly did in his "Levantiner"), the right title would be Galata. Alex, there is a "real" discussion here. Best. --E4024 (talk) 10:50, 3 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Origin of Galata / Etymology edit

I have removed the suggestion of "According to the Italians, the name comes from calata (meaning "downward slope"), as the neighbourhood is sloped and goes downwards to the sea from a hilltop." because it has no citation and sounds downright ludicrous and nationalistic that the Italian (Tuscan) language gave the origin to the name of a site in Thrace as the name was used long before the Italian modern language came into being. There is also no sources for any of the remaining theories on the name of the city, which I have left alone for now. Sleath56 (talk) 01:33, 22 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
