File:Dendrocygna bicolor wilhelma.jpg to appear as POTD soon edit

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Dendrocygna bicolor wilhelma.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on July 22, 2010. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2010-07-22. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :) Thanks! howcheng {chat} 22:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Fulvous Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna bicolor) is a whistling duck which breeds across the world's tropical regions. It is a common species, growing to about 48–53 cm (19–21 in) long. Its habitat is still freshwater lakes, paddy fields or reservoirs with plentiful vegetation, where it feeds mainly at night on seeds and other parts of plants.Photo: Branko Kannenberg

Comments from Crisco edit

Hi Jim, sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this... had a bout of the flu.

  • Dendrocygna is derived from the Ancient Greek dendron ... - Except you just mentioned the initial name as Anas bicolor, and have not discussed dendrocygna yet
  • maximum known age is 6·5 years - ? Do you mean 6.5 or 5 to 6?

Very ready for GAC, although I am not familiar enough with the topic area to talk about FAC. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:31, 27 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

In Popular Culture section suggestion edit

This specific species is mentioned somewhat at length in an episode of Stargate SG-1. Not sure if this is significant enough. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Recap/StargateSG1S10E5Uninvited — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.9.218.11 (talk) 17:18, 26 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

– Invert the redirections as the consensus and guidelines recommend not to capitalise the common (vernacular) names of species. See Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Bird common name decapitalisation and Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Animals, plants, and other organisms. Coreyemotela (talk) 13:27, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Support Several of these have already been done with no difficultly.--67.70.140.89 (talk) 19:55, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Inclusion of Category: Breeds of Ducks reverted edit

I noted that this page did not have the category Breeds of Ducks that is present on other Duck pages and added it. I note that the category was removed. Might there be a reason why? Should that category be removed from the other Duck pages? Tigey (talk) 09:10, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I reverted your edit because Category:Duck_breeds is for domesticated and human-selected "breeds" - this is a wild species that is not kept by poulterers/duck-breeders/duck-farmers. Shyamal (talk) 09:18, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
