Requested move 25 April 2020 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Consensus against the proposed title "FIAT". Any editor may move this to "Fiat" if she feels it's appropriate. (closed by non-admin page mover) feminist | wear a mask 17:39, 8 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • [Post close comment - The article was moved to Fiat and then moved back to this name so it would be best to start an RFC if wanting to move to Fiat.Davey2010Talk 19:03, 8 May 2020 (UTC)]Reply

Fiat AutomobilesFIAT – Per MOS:CAPSACRS, in reality, "FIAT" is an acronym for "Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin", which, in Italian, is "Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino". Since it is an acronym, all the letters should be in upper case. 2601:8C:4580:A1A0:901C:296B:4134:5E51 (talk) 19:45, 25 April 2020 (UTC) Relisting. Steel1943 (talk) 00:08, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. Anyway, as the lede explains, the official name has been "Fiat Automobiles" since 2007, and is used here as a WP:NATURALDIS from other meanings of "fiat". 94.21.253.28 (talk) 02:28, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose as above. Probably actually move to Fiat which already redirects here. Clear primary topic and common name. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:09, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree with moving over Fiat too. Same ed, new IP 62.165.227.49 (talk) 04:58, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose as per the IP - Also Jaguar Cars, Ford Motor Company, Hyundai Motors all are listed under the official names (instead of them being Jaguar, Ford, Hyundai) so IMHO an RFC should be made on a Car-related Wikiproject and that we get consensus for all articles not just one, Anwyay oppose per COMMONNAME. –Davey2010Talk 10:59, 3 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
    • That would be because there are other equally notable meanings for Jaguar, Ford (which I'm honestly not sure should redirect to the motor company, given the river crossing) and Hyundai. But the car company is the primary topic for Fiat. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:03, 6 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Fiat AutomobilesFiat – Per WP:COMMONNAME, it is simply known as "Fiat". 2601:8C:4580:A1A0:488B:BA9D:A032:6686 (talk) 21:28, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Support — The last discussion of this (above) had too few participants, and got hung up on the title FIAT in all caps, which is a separate issue, and yes, the MOS would render it as Fiat, not FIAT, but otherwise any argument that Fiat Automobiles is correct per COMMONNAME is misguided. Preferring Fiat is a textbook example of the common name guideline. Nobody uses the term "Fiat Automobiles", everyone just says Fiat, even the most formal reliable sources. Any arguments that Fiat Automobiles is the "official" name are irrelevant. What has to go on legal documents matters not at all for Wikipedia. It should have been Fiat from day 1 and never should have been moved. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 21:58, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. It's known worldwide as Fiat. The actual official name is FIAT which is an abbreviation and not a word, but no one ever calls it that. There is even a Finnish joke saying "Osta Fiat, siinä on kaikki viat", meaning "Buy a Fiat, it has all the faults". It wouldn't work with the abbreviation. JIP | Talk 00:16, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
According to the article itself, the official name is "Fiat Automobiles", not "FIAT". 94.21.252.238 (talk) 05:57, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
The article also says "originally FIAT, Italian: Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino, lit.'Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin')". Also, please do not modify other people's comments. JIP | Talk 08:24, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about that, my cursor must have slipped, I meant it (the rationale per WP:COMMONNAME) to be part of my own comment. Saying it was the official name is different from saying it is. 94.21.252.238 (talk) 01:39, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support as per COMMONNAME, Also yes I was wrong to previously !Oppose per COMMONNAME - I was simply trying to get a main RFC going for all manufacturers (IE Ford, Hyundai, etc etc etc) and had to oppose for something, Anyway they've always been referred to as Fiat commonly IRL and online, Easy support. –Davey2010Talk 00:23, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support as I did (different IP) in previous discussion. It's a little odd to say that that got "hung up" about FIAT being in all caps when that was the proposed destination. 94.21.252.238 (talk) 05:57, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Fiat is the most common used name, FIAT is a historic name, Fiat Automobiles is an official but not commonly used name. YBSOne (talk) 11:47, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. WP:COMMONNAME and WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:36, 20 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per Ford Red Slash 17:13, 21 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose conflicts with Fiat money. I think nothing wrong with having "Automobiles" in the article name. Jtbobwaysf (talk) 18:00, 21 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

The entry needs to be expanded; the corresponding Wikipedia page in Italian is much longer, especially the "History" section. JackkBrown (talk) 00:22, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
