Used a template. Just to show the continuity of the Malaysian history before the formation of Malaysia. Need feedback and more info. Not that much is known about British Malaya. Thanks

Common name in Infobox

Noticed a change in the common name to Malaya. Yes indeed should be so. But the field common_name in the Infobox is to act as a pointer for the Flag of XXX and Coat of arms of XXX links beneath the respective flag and arms images. Placing Malaya would mean that it would attempt to generate a link to Flag of Malaya and Coat of arms of Malaya which are not created yet, and the template will be forced to just display Flag and Coat of arms. Anyway, the coat of arms of Malaya and Malaysia are basically the same and so are the flags and I do not see the necessity to create new articles dedicated to these two. Better still would be to expand this two articles instead.

The Malayan and Malaysian coats of arms are not "basically the same". The coat of arms currently shown is incorrect: the bottom row with the badges of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore/the national flower should not be there. The four colours of the Federated Malay States should occupy the entire central space divided into quarters. The Malacca segment should show A Famosa, not the pokok Melaka. Yeh, have to agree on that though, would be great if you can find and create an article about it, so later we can have the infobox points to the new one. Or just give me the image or something so I can look into it. --Bukhrin 04:18, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Please read the infobox former country help page about the common_name field. here next time somebody wants to change the common name. It's okay to change it to "Malaya" but only if you are willing to help create the articles about the flag and coat of arms. And please read Flag of Malaysia, you'll noticed that the Flag of Malaya is also in the article. I don't exactly see the need for all this, since Malaysia and Malaya is the same country. They don't have separate articles for the US Flag when they have 13 states and so on till the 50th state, do they? --Bukhrin 20:14, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Coat of Arm of Malaya

The coat of arms had been changed numerous times and I think nobody is sure for how many times and what the changes were. Such as the variations of symbols of Sabah and Sarawak (was it Brooke's flag + kingfisher? hornbill + kingfisher? the current sabah symbol + hornbill? etc.), symbol for Pulau Pinang, Melaka and also the different guardian Tigers (the wussy old ones vs the current buffed up ones). Interesting to note about how the Coat of Arms of Malaysia looked like when Singapore was in. It was Singapore's civil ensign but replaced by the hibiscus (seemingly out of place when the shield represents the states of the federation) when they left 2 years after. You can see it here. Would be nice if they can represent the Federal Territory inside the shield, and my bet is they would have replaced the hibiscus with the Twin Towers. LOL --Bukhrin 04:46, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but all that are Malaysia's, the federation of 14 (later 13) states. I am referring to Malaya, the federation of 11 states instead. Malayan's coat of arm shouldn't include insignias for Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. __earth ^(Talk) 11:50, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, I did some research and can confirmed how it looked like. It's the coat of arms used in the Proclamation of Independence 1957 which luckily I have a copy of. To sum it up, it was the FMS coat of arms with the quartered FMS shield squashed with the 5 kris at the top and the symbols of Pulau Pinang and Melaka at the sides. Other modifications were the banner (like the one used now) and the crescent and 11-pointed star replacing the British Imperial Crown at the top. The coat of arms of Malaya presents the link between the old FMS coat of arms and the coat of arms used today. I can also confirmed that the coat of arms in 16 September 1963 (union with Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak) is the same like the link in post above (from the Proclamation of Malaysia). I can try scanning and e-mail both of the Proclamations if anyone is interested.

I have created and upload the coat of arms for Malaya, you can see it in the article page. However, the quality is a bit on the low side since I had to use Microsoft Paint. --Bukhrin 20:53, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

There shoud be a section discussing criticism against the Federation including the People's Constitution Proposal, the nationwide hartal as well as the contribution of the leftist movement (sans communist). Membership of the Federal Legislative Council

The figures for the ethnic composition of the Federal Legislative Council appear to be wrong somewhere; they add up to more than the total membership! 28 Malays + 14 Chinese + 6 Indians = 48 but 11 State and Settlement Members + 34 unofficial members = 45. Flag

Hey, there appears to be some back-and-forth about the flag in the infobox. What are the points in favor of adding two flags? I really think that it adds way more problems than it solves. Sure there was a flag that was effective for 3 years, but a new one was adopted and remained the flag for the bulk of Malaya's history. If the old flag is notable, can't we mention it further down the page? TheSavageNorwegian 19:16, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
