Likelihood of errors on a credit report

I removed the phrase "but most well-done" studies show .... There was no citation to prove that a "well-done" (a subjective term) study shows CRA's making such an arguably small amount of errors per consumer. On the contrary, most press reports in the last 5 years (insert citation here) and the recent passage of the FACTA act of 2003, would certainly give considerable evidence that the opposite was true. --Julien Deveraux 00:54, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Free credit report link

I'm very opposed to the huge growth in spam on WP, but I restored the link to the free credit report website in this article. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, passed in 2003 as an amendment to the FCRA, specifically required that procedures be created to allow consumers access to one free annual credit report. The link that was removed was one of the mechanisms created by the major credit bureaus to get the free credit report. So, in essence, this website was created pursuant to the statute discussed in this article. It looks like spam, but it's not; it's actually a very relevant external link.--Kubigula (talk) 03:31, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

You added a good reference to the article. However, you still seem to think that annualcreditreport.com is a "commercial link". I know it smells like spam - most of the "free" credit report sites are really trying to sell you credit protection or credit watch or some such, but this one is the real deal. There are basically three ways to get the annual free credit report provided for by FACTA - by phone, mail or online (via annualcreditreport.com). Check of the FTC advisory site on obtaining the report.[1] Annualcreditreport.com really isn't a commercial site - the CBRs would actually save money if no-one ever used the site. Please understand that I have no connection to the site, this just happens to be my field of expertise.

So, I think the link is a relevant, notable and non-commercial external link to include with this article. I know WP is not in the "how-to" business, but this is an external link that has the added benefit of helping people. I agree & disagree. annualcreditreport.com is owned buy Central Source LLC. Its probably more notable to direct readers directly to the sources, in their respective articles;

Understand these are all huge "for profit' corporations, so in the case of annualcreditreport.com, which exclusively exist to promote a service and requires registration, policy clearly states that annualcreditreport.com is a Link normally to be avoided. The exception for linking to annualcreditreport.com, as mentioned, is if it is the subject of the article or the official page of the article subject. --Hu12 06:18, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I agree and disagree. I agree that creating an article on annualcreditreport.com is a good way to address some of the concerns you raise, and I certainly agree that Equifax, Experian and TU exist to make a profit. However, I disagree this falls under links to be avoided, as annualcreditreport.com is not selling its service. It's not a "for profit" (or even voluntary) service that is being provided. The CRAs are in the business of selling access to credit information, not giving it away. The registration issue is a more on point, but I think that the content of this particular site is both relevant and unique in that its existance is required by the statute (as amended) that is the topic of this article.--Kubigula (talk) 16:56, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
