I always knew the game simply as "Droom" at school (as the title screen suggests), but most web sources seem to label it "Dread Dragon Droom" so I have placed the article here, with a redirect at Droom.
Does anyone have any more information on HUMMEC (did it cover just Humberside or other areas too? Some web sources suggest it was part of a larger "Resource Consortium" - can anyone clarify? Zorba the Geek 16:45, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
The correct title of the program was Dread Dragon Droom, although invariably it was shortened to Droom. Along with a program called Granny's garden it was one of the earliest educational computer games.
HUMMEC was started in 1984 and covered just Humberside. HUMMEC was set up to be a training and resource base for using ICT within schools in Humberside. It was staffed by a Head of Centre, a secretary and by a number of advisory teachers from primary, secondary ad special schools. HUMMEC was part of the Resource consortium. At that time local authorities were not allowed to operate commercially, so it was necessary to use Resource as the publishing arm for this and other programs developed within Humberside.
Derek Allen created Droom purely for use in his own school. It was somewhat unstable, and so HUMMEC tidied up the software to make it more stable.
