What about "shaft(s)" or "pole"?? HJJHolm (talk) 08:25, 17 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

As always, if you can source it, now we're talking.
"Drawbar" has two meanings: the longitudinal bar in tension, also the crosswise bar that's rigidly fixed to the chassis and takes bending loads. Even - for some light car designs - a longitudinal fixed bar. Those synonyms would only apply to the first.
"Shafts" I've not heard, particularly in plural. When applied to horse-drawn haulage, where it's common, those shafts are always paired, one each side of the animal (A single pole with a cross-tree was used in Roman and up to medieval times, as an inefficient means of harnessing oxen. Its replacement by the horse collar and paired shafts is a widely discussed crucial step in the use of horses as draught animals.).
"Pole" is used, but I only know of this for low-speed work, such as yard shunting and aircraft towing. Such poles normally have their own small wheels too. I'm unfamiliar with the term being used for the sort of long-distance haulage that a drawbar is. Andy Dingley (talk) 08:56, 17 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Looking at some traction engine stuff, there seems to be a distinction between "poles", as used by threshing teams, and "drawbars" used for heavy haulage teams on roads. These were usually different crews with different engines, the threshers moving a train of wagons from farm to farm in order to use the threshing machine and then having to shunt them within a farmyard. The haulage engines were paid to move heavy engineering loads. Andy Dingley (talk) 08:19, 18 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. All this should be incorporated into the article! Btw, it remains aunclear, why you regarding "shafts" first declare not to have heard of, however then describe it ... HJJHolm (talk) 09:17, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

But shafts are different. It's the common term, paired, for animal haulage, but I've not seen it used for vehicle to vehicle connection. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:47, 27 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Definitely. Pointless split-off of minuscule subtopic. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 15:06, 19 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge this covers the same topic. AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 14:27, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge per Angus, although there isn't that much to merge. Nice pictures, I guess. Ovinus (talk) 01:50, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Merge While seemingly different, a drawbar cannot work without some form of connection, be that fixed or occasional! 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 06:55, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
