Returned to mainspace edit

After coming across the growing number of sources (such as [1]) mentioning the cyclone, I have returned this article to the mainspace. If notability concerns still exist, WP:AFD is the proper venue so as to avoid a move-war. SamHolt6 (talk) 21:54, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@SamHolt6: News coverage does not determine notability for tropical cyclones. In fact, every time a hurricane forms and is near land in the Atlantic, news sources will cover it. This does not mean a storm is notable. Notability is determined by what the storm actually did.
  • 1. Did the storm make landfall? No (isn't likely to do so based on this)
  • 2. Did the storm have longevity? No
  • 3. Did the storm set important meteorological records? No
  • 4. Did the storm have impacts? Possibly
  • With this one, you need to look at the size of the season article. It is currently quite small. Would it be worth having a separate article with minimal impacts? If it can be covered within the season article, there would be no reason to have a separate article.
This article absolutely reeks of WP:CRYSTAL in the preparations (Gujarat section). Tropical storm force winds are barely grazing the shore and landfall is no longer expected to occur. Unless significant damage has occurred and has sources to back it up, this article should be merged into the season article. NoahTalk 02:26, 13 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I would have to disagree there. There is no relevance to WP:CRYSTAL at all here. The article does not claim to predict any future events; it merely reports on the warnings which were issued to the public, which is exactly what it is supposed to do. Secondly, whether or not it makes landfall is largely irrelevant in this instance. It is a strong tropical cyclone which is going to skim the coastline if it doesn't make landfall, which will have almost the same effect. Any tropical cyclone that comes that close to land will produce impacts. I would also argue that the storm is in fact of meteorological significance. Cyclones of Vayu's strength are uncommon this far north in the Arabian Sea. The last system which had comparable intensity at this latitude was Nilofar 5 years ago, and there was Phet 4 years before that. So, in the last decade, there have only been two other systems of comparable intensity at this latitude in the Arabian Sea. Finally, the system is having impacts. It is not every day that more than a quarter of a million people are evacuated from their towns. One thing that must be considered here is whether or not keeping this article is doing damage to the encyclopedia. The answer to that is of course a concrete no. You can guarantee that this article will have a large number of page views. I mean, for Heaven's sake, it has already been viewed more than 500 times in the five hours that it has been in the article namespace. We should be supporting the creation of articles here, not advocating for deletion, and robbing readers of a resource on a cyclone which would not be done justice by a short season article section. I am fine with this being moved back to Draft space temporarily, but there is no question that this should be an article soon. ChocolateTrain (talk) 02:57, 13 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Tropical cyclones are relatively infrequent in northwestern India, and the state of Gujarat had not experienced a hurricane-force tropical cyclone landfall in more than two decades. The last such storm was an unnamed system which made landfall [...] That is WP:CRYSTAL. This was added in anticipation of a landfall that almost certainly will not occur now. Also, uncommon in that area is not justification for an article. South Atlantic systems are uncommon and we do not make articles for them even though some could have had a minor impact. As for the impact, there is a big difference between Cat 2 winds and 35–40 knot winds. It will certainly not have the same effect on the area. As of now, this storm does not have the notability required for an article. If there is a significant impact, add it in and keep the article. If there isn't, it needs to be merged. Vayu has some notability now since multiple deaths have been reported and therefore can stay in the main space. The only limiting factor on keeping this article will be how much information can be found regarding the impact once all the dust settles. NoahTalk 18:12, 13 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why? edit

Why there is Category 3 strength in the Vayu track map (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Vayu#/media/File:Vayu_2019_track.png) but it's only 95 knots.... EllaCyclone (talk) 17:51, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@EllaCyclone: The JTWC reanalysed the intensity to have peaked at 100 kn at 12:00 UTC on 13 June. ChocolateTrain (talk) 16:37, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Structure edit

@ChocolateTrain: Changed the class of the article to C. I do not agree with having a section on Etymology. You could easily shorten that up and combine it into the lede. Just put it after the pronunciation and include the language + meaning. NoahTalk 12:50, 20 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
