Queen's County

According to my family mythology, this is fact:

Created in 1556 by Mary I of England as Queen's County, alongside King's County (Offaly) it received a substantial Plantation of English and Huguenot-decendant families.

Your are to a large degree correct; the date is correct and the name, and Portarlington had a Huguenot community, also English were indeed planted throughout the county, perhaps the only thing to be cautious of is the use of "substantial". 18:51, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Am looking for the family of John Kennedy who migrated to Canada thence to New York state and on to Illinois. He married anne Goimal in Canada. He stated he was from Queens County. No other reference is known. How do I proceed? Thankyou for your interest. Phyllis Norman Grissom

Economy of Laois

The article previously had a line stating: "Agriculture is the largest sector of the economy, with 70 % of the area (1,200 km²/460 sq mi), farmed every year." This seems quite inaccurate to me. It would seem reasonable to say that "Agriculture takes up 70 % of the land area (1,200 km²/460 sq mi), farmed every year." Though there is no source given for this by whoever posted it. In relation to the economy, the Central Statistics office of Ireland only publishes a per region breakdown of sectoral composition. In this regard, in 2005, the latest year for which this figure is available at the time of writing, the relevant figures for the BMW region, of which Laois forms a part, are: Gross Value Added (GVA) at Basic Prices by Region, Year, Statistic and Industry Branch Year Agriculture Industry Services Total 2005 3.9% 34.9% 61.2% 100.0% Source: Central Statistics Office

It can appear to me me that there is a persistent stereotype amongst some citizens of certain other countries, that the Irish economy is a predominantly agricultural one, when in fact this has not been the case since several decades.--Markmorker (talk) 16:17, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Laois/Tipperary borders

Can someone wrap this one up?

In 'O'Hart's Irish Pedigrees', on p.243, re the family of 'Jacob, of Dublin', one member of the family marries a daughter of Capt. James Read of 17th Lancers, who is described as living at Mount Heaton, Queen's County. Queen's County being Co. Laois.

Any Google (others are available, but not half as popular...), of Mount Heaton, however, will produce references to King's County. King's Co. being Co. Offaly.

So, how come the discrepancy? Printer's error? Himself is a blackguard and a charlatan, who made a classic error that would be his unmasking?

My best effort is as follows. Mount Heaton is not a town or village, but a large house. The house has since been renamed and is now known as the Abbey of Mount Joseph. Mount Heaton is an Ascendancy name, dating from 1710 and extols the Heaton family; the traditional Irish name for the demesne was: Ballyskenagh (or: Ballyskenach). Mount Joseph dates from 1878.

The only problem is that Mount Heaton/Mount Joseph/Ballyskenagh is/are in a third County: Co. Tipperary. It is in Roscrea.

Roscrea lies by the county boundaries. On the Irish Times online guide to Catholic parishes, it is shown on the Queen's/Laois Co. side of the border.

The WP entry on the Abbey describes it as being actually in Offaly, but using Roscrea, in Tipperary, as the postal address. That's even better. However, it doesn't explain the Times map showing Roscrea parish as being 'not-in-Tipperary', but in Queen's/Laois.

So, has the border changed over the years? If so, could someone tackle that on the WP entries?

Error in Sistercity/twin city

Check out: Sister cities of Arlington, Massachusetts where it is stated "Note that the data on Wikipedia is highly unreliable. In many cases, sister cities are missing or wrongly listed."
