I added some major revisions to the article. In particular I rewrote the intro, and I added the following relevant sections:

Description
Purposes
Standards and Regulations
Environmental Aspects

I kept the history section pretty unchanged. I added a headline and corrected one source. However the section is still pretty weak. It focuses only on the Egyptian section. Much of it appears to be original research. I would appreciate if some expert could work on this.
