Anyone know if the actual flag has portholes on the ships to match the logo and coat of arms? _└ ^OzLawyer / _talk ^┐ 04:38, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Disinformation

The article says: "Western Isles Council was retracted in 1997 under the Local Government (Gaelic Names) (Scotland) Act 1997, meaning that the former Western Isles are now officially named Na h-Eileanan Siar, even in English-language contexts."

But the council itself, on its own web page, has enough common sense to not completely hide themselves away in oblivion. Their own page title as listed on their main page at http://www.cne-siar.gov.uk/ as you can see by looking at the top of your browser when you go there, is Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - Western Isles Council.

Language

The article claims "the former Western Isles are now officially named Na h-Eileanan Siar, even in English-language contexts." It seems absurd to me to claim that the name of something in one language can be imposed into another. For example, Germany is known as Deutschland in German. The article is suggesting the equivalent that the country could somehow be "renamed" to Deutschland in English. "Officially named". The UK Government has decided that the council has the right to decide what language its official name is in, and the council has decided that its official name is in Gaelic. This doesn't prevent people calling it Western Isles, of course, but if people were to call me "Beloved" on the grounds that they're not speaking Hebrew, that wouldn't stop my name being David. 86.138.210.236 (talk) 21:52, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Electoral System

Gaelic name of Council, IPA

The article begins "Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Scottish Gaelic: Comhairle Na h-Eileanan Siar, IPA: [ˈkoːrʎə nə ˈhelanən ˈʃiəɾ])..." The Gaelic version and the IPA given are gramatically incorrect. The name which is officially used in English by the Council is the Scottish Gaelic form "Comhairle nan Eilean Siar," (where else would the name have come from -- it's certainly not English!) so it's a bit odd that someone has put in an incorrect Gaelic version in the brackets. To spell it out, what we have here are not an English and a Gaelic version of the Council's name, but two Gaelic versions, one correct and one incorrect. When the Council was formed, one of the first items on the agenda was a debate about whether the correct Gaelic form of its name was "Comhairle nan Eilean" or "Comhairle na h-Eileanan." (The "Siar," meaning "West," was not part of the Council's name at the time.) The gramatically correct definite article for the genitive plural in this case is in fact "nan," and the genitive plural of "eilean" is simply "eilean," which is what the Council went with.
