Indie?

I have been working on this article on and off for quite a while. I came up with the rather extensively detailed discography, among other things. The reason why I thought I should leave a note here is that I do not believe Come to be "indie rock," at least not in the meaning the phrase implies nowadays. Yes, they were signed to independent music labels -Matador, Beggar's Banquet, Sub Pop-, but that is not what "indie rock" has come to signify. Why call Come "indie rock" and the White Stripes (Come's commercially viable yet illegitimate child, in musical terms) "alternative rock"? x.-

Ah, so it was you who provided the brilliant edits to the discography section, as well as other things. You deserve a round of applause for your excellent work. In response to your note: I think you're right. The term "indie rock" may have been appropriate for Come ten years ago, but the perceptions and things associated with the term have since changed. I don't know if I would agree with you about the White Stripes stemming (legitimately or otherwise) from Come, but then I have a personal bias against the White Stripes. To define the genre of a band or a musician's music based solely on the company that releases said band or artist's records is idiotic. Come can clearly be connected to the wikipedia article "Independent Music," but it seems foolish to connect them to the wikipedia article "Indie Rock": the term has become such as lax and vague one that it is essentially a non-statement. What does Slint's music have in common with Elliott Smith's or Pavement's? Nothing. Genre-wise, absolutely nothing. 81.99.193.239 (talk) 15:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
